Like with most of Apple?s products, rumors about the iPad 2 began surfacing months before its official announcement. ?But when accurately designed cases from third-party manufacturers starting appearing in December of last year, Hon Hai (trade name Foxconn) started to investigate the source of the information. ?According to a report on The Wall Street Journal site, three individuals were just sentenced for their part in the iPad 2 information leaks.
It?s reported that the general manager of Shenzhen MacTop Electronics Co.,?Xiao Chengsong,?offered 20,000 yuan ($3,000), plus discounts on MacTop products, to a former Hon Hai employee named Hou Pengna, for information about the iPad 2. ?The Shenzhen Bao?an People?s Court?said Ms. Hou then paid ?Hon Hai R&D employee Lin Kecheng to provide digital images of the device?s back cover six months before the iPad 2 was publicly announced.
The court sentenced Mr. Xiao to 18 months in prison and a fine of 150,000 yuan, Mr. Lin to 14 months and 100,000 yuan and Ms. Hou to a year and 30,000 yuan.
?We cannot comment on matters of internal security, but Foxconn takes its commitment to protecting its intellectual property as well as that of its customers very seriously and undertakes all appropriate actions to safeguard against any violations,? Hon Hai said in a written statement.
With the seriousness of this recent crackdown, it will be interesting to see whether or not it has any impact on future iPhone 5 and iPad 3 product information leaks.
