Meet the Very First Rover To Land On Mars

Mars 3 was a probe, not a rover.

Soviets definitely got their probe on before the west, and probed repeatedly, both Mars and Venus.

The probes on Venus had really short lives, due to the inhospitable conditions.. lot of cash for a little bit of observations. (I think the longest living one made two hours? forget now).

Federal court rejects GOP-drawn Texas voting maps

(AP) ? Stadiums and hospitals removed from the districts of black congressional members and country clubs newly drawn into those of white incumbents. A lawyer emailing "No bueno" to a Republican staffer about plans that risked leaving a paper trail and jeopardizing the legality of a voting map.

Those were among the evidence a Washington federal court used to determine that Texas Republican lawmakers discriminated against minorities while drawing new political boundaries, throwing out the maps as violations of the Voting Rights Act but likely not in time to affect the November elections.

The decision Tuesday by the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia is instead likely to reverberate in 2014, when some Texans could find their congressional and statehouse districts changed for the third time in five years.

The long-awaited ruling was hailed as a sweeping victory by minority rights groups that sued the state after the Republican-controlled Legislature pushed through new redistricting maps last year. Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott called the decision "flawed" and vowed to appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court.

"Better late than never," said Luis Vera, attorney for the League of United Latin American Citizens, one of the groups that sued the state. "It's a hell of a victory."

The court concluded that the maps didn't comply with the federal Voting Rights Act. In a 154-page opinion handed down nearly seven months after a Washington trial, the three-judge panel ruled that state attorneys failed to prove that Texas lawmakers did not draw new congressional and state Senate districts "without discriminatory purposes."

In some cases, the court wrote, black congressional members in Texas had economic drivers such as sporting arenas freshly carved out of their districts, though "no such surgery" was performed on any belonging to white incumbents.

"Anglo district boundaries were redrawn to include particular country clubs and, in one case, the school belonging to the incumbent's grandchildren," said U.S. Circuit Judge Thomas Griffith, writing the opinion for the panel.

On the state Senate map, the judges said, one email sent to a leading Republican mapmaker indicated that staffers "feared their actions might create the appearance of impropriety" under voting rights laws. In the email, a lawyer advised "No bueno" to a plan that risked leaving a paper trail showing that some proposed changes were never going to be considered.

The court found no "direct evidence" that discrimination was behind how the maps were drawn ? no emails or letters, for instance, that reveal state officials plotting to suppress minority voting. The panel instead looked to circumstantial evidence and then inferred an intent to discriminate.

Abbott said Tuesday's ruling "extends the Voting Rights Act beyond the limits intended by Congress and beyond the boundaries imposed by the Constitution."

With just two months until Election Day, the fallout from the ruling is unlikely to be felt until new maps are installed for 2014. Instead, voters in Texas this November will use interim political maps drawn last year by a different three-judge panel in San Antonio. That court is handling the lawsuit filed by minority groups, while the Washington panel took up the separate issue of whether the maps complied with the Voting Rights Act.

Known as seeking "preclearance," Texas and eight other, predominantly Southern states with a history of racial bias must submit their political maps to the U.S. Justice Department for compliance review. State prosecutors, however, sought preclearance through the federal court in Washington rather than through the Justice Department.

Opponents said the state's strategy of skirting the Justice Department backfired.

Nina Perales, attorney for the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund, said Tuesday's ruling indicates that at least four state House seats, one state Senate seat and at least four congressional seats must be looked at again for 2014.

"It seems that Texas risked and lost more by going to the D.C. court than by going to DOJ," Perales said. "Particularly when you factor in the enormous expense of litigating a redistricting case."

How Texas redrew its political boundaries was watched particularly closely after the state was awarded four additional U.S. House seats because of its booming population. The surge has been driven almost entirely by minorities, who account for more than 87 percent of the population growth in Texas over the last 10 years.

Those congressional seats were split into two safely Republican districts and two safely Democratic ones. Yet in considering the congressional map as a whole, the Washington panel appeared troubled that minority lawmakers who found their former offices and "economic guts," such as stadiums and hospitals, drawn out of their new district.

Texas' argument boiled down to politics: The state's lawyers said the map crafted by the Legislature reflected a GOP majority seeking to squeeze a partisan advantage out of the once-a-decade redistricting process, not a willful disregard for the Voting Rights Act. The state also maintained that lawmakers kept a cool distance from the process, leaving much of the work of drawing districts to legislative staff.

The state also argued it was only a "coincidence" that district offices and economic drivers were removed from minority districts and not those belonging to white incumbents, according to the court opinion.

"But if this was coincidence, it was a striking one indeed," the ruling said. "It is difficult to believe that pure chance would lead to such results."

PFT: Tracking all the roster cutdowns

Carolina Panthers v New York JetsGetty Images

Jets fans were booing.

And they had every right. After paying full fare for tickets, and parking, and (hopefully) beer, they were forced to watch the Jets offense.

But at least the Jets are consistent.

Even after getting a turnover and a short field (taking over at the Panthers 12-yard line), the Jets starting offense continued to pitch a shutout in the preseason, failing to get into the end zone.

If you?re scoring at home (and they?re not, or on the road either), that?s 15 possessions for the starters in the preseason, and no touchdowns. The backups haven?t scored either, leaving no hope that personnel changes are going to fix things.

While it?s easy to rail on quarterback Mark Sanchez, it?s misguided as well, as he suffered through several dropped passes.?They actually looked competent early in the game running no-huddle, but that didn?t last long.

But Sanchez was unnecessarily glib on the sidelines, joking with Michelle Tafoya that they were saving all their touchdowns for the regular season.

For it to have been funny, there would have to be an expectation this wasn?t actually what they are.

The good news is the Jets defense was strong.

It better be.

Here are some other things we learned on Sunday Night Football.

1. There were cheers when Tim Tebow took the field.

I?m not sure anymore if they were sarcastic or sincere.

Of course, when he got a few plays under his belt, they were booing him too. Those were sincere.

The Jets night in a nutshell was when he jumped up to celebrate a surprising first-down scramble, and a few plays later, threw an ugly pick.

End well, this will not.

2. Cam Newton can make plays even without a gaudy stat line.

He was a positively Tebowian 6-of-15 passing for 60 yards and a touchdown, and ran twice for 16 yards.

But he makes the Panthers offense move.

They don?t want him to run as much on purpose this year, but the threat of him making a decision on a zone read is enough to freeze opponents for a second and buy time for him to do something else with it.

3. There should have been more cheers for Panthers linebacker Thomas Davis, playing his first preseason game since his surgery to repair his third torn ACL.

Davis has incredible gifts, or had them before his knee was shredded. He can still run well, and the Panthers are going to spot him in rather than try to ask him to play every snap.

As a blitzer and a guy who can drop back and cover tight ends, he?s still good.

But they?ll probably never stop holding their breath every time he hits the ground.

4. The Jets offense has problems, but they are not without players on that side.?Problem is, they?re all getting hurt.

Tight end Dustin Keller left the game early with a hamstring problem, and then backup Josh Baker was take off with a right knee injury.

Whether it?s Sanchez or Tebow, the Jets need safe passes. And without a solid tight end out there (or even his backup), they have issues.

They should sign Jeremy Shockey, for comic relief if nothing else.

5. Not a banner night for the Panthers highly paid stable of running backs.

DeAngelo Williams fumbled twice, Jonathan Stewart was hauled off on a cart with an ankle injury, and Mike Tolbert was on the bench with a bag of ice on his knee.

Armond Smith and Josh Vaughan are up for contract extensions next.

6. The Jets got consistent pressure up front from their starting defense.

Quinton Coples and Muhammad Wilkerson in particular got a good push on a Panthers line that?s at least above average and may be very good.

They?re going to be asked to carry a team, and they may be able to.

7. The Panthers have apparently elected to go with slow and steady over athletic ability at free safety.

Former Ravens backup Haruki Nakamura (who was stuck behind some guy named Ed Reed) got the start and took all the work with the first offense.

Former second-round pick Sherrod Martin, who unlike Nakamura has range, is now a bench warmer.

This was initially a competition, but it appears the Panthers have made their decision. Martin?s such a better athlete it?s comical, but he had a series of gaffes in coverage last year that even had the owner cracking on him.

Basically, they?re electing to go with a limitation they can plan on rather than guessing where the more talented Martin will be.

8. The Panthers offense wasn?t very good either. But unlike the Jets, they had a reason.

Without wide receiver Steve Smith, the Panthers offense is completely different. He?s the vertical threat that makes everything else work.

The good news is, he?s going to be OK after dealing with an infection in his foot.

Egypt prosecutor probes anti-Brotherhood critic

CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt's attorney general has referred an outspoken anti-Islamist former lawmaker and for investigation by police prosecutors over claims he called for the downfall of the regime, according to a statement Sunday.

The charge added to concerns that the government is backtracking on the democratic aims of the uprising that toppled the autocratic regime last year.

The complaint submitted against Mohamed Abu-Hamed by another former lawmaker also accuses him of trying to mobilize Egypt's minority Coptic Christians to protest and cause religious strife.

If the case is taken to court and he is found guilty, Abu-Hamed would face a maximum sentence of three years prison.

Abu-Hamed has a doctorate in Islamic theology and was the deputy leader of the liberal Free Egyptians Party, but split away to become an independent lawmaker before parliament was dissolved.

The investigation against Abu-Hamed comes two days after he led a march of around 3,000 people to the presidential palace to protest against the recently elected president, Mohammed Morsi, and his Muslim Brotherhood.

A number of other cases against critics of the Brotherhood, including TV host Tawfiq Okasha and newspaper editor Islam Afifi, who was briefly imprisoned, have stoked concerns that freedom of speech is being curbed, despite last year's uprising that called for greater rights with the downfall of longtime ruler Hosni Mubarak's regime.

The Brotherhood accused Okasha and his associates of being behind arson attacks on a number of the group's offices around the country.

He faces trial for his remarks, among them telling viewers that the killing Morsi was permissible. He claimed the Brotherhood and Morsi plan to kill him and retorted, "Fine, I declare it permissible to shed your blood, too."

Despite his popularity in some segments, neither Okasha nor Abu-Hamed have the support of the youth and revolutionaries who helped engineer last year's uprising.

Youth activists launched a snide campaign last week aimed at raising money to send Abu-Hamed on a one-way trip from Egypt to Malaysia.

"We need to unite around one cause. We thought about what this cause could be: Abu-Hamed. In order to move from old Egypt to new Egypt we need to get rid of a few people: Abu-Hamed," a young man says on a YouTube video titled "Get Abu-Hamed Out of Egypt."

Many see Okasha as inflammatory and crass, and others consider Abu-Hamed an opportunist who has flip-flopped alliances since rising to fame during parliamentary elections late last year.

Although the protest march led by Abu-Hamed on Friday was relatively small, it reflects a wider feeling that the Brotherhood is power hungry after decades of being outlawed.

The Brotherhood won the most seats in parliament and then the presidency, and it has clashed with liberals over the formation of a body tasked with writing a new constitution, with secular representatives walking out.

Trying to counter the misgivings, Morsi, who is Egypt's first freely elected civilian and Islamist to take office, has reached out to a wide spectrum of groups and recently named the country's former defense minister ? a holdover of the Mubarak regime ? a Coptic Christian and at least two women as presidential advisers. His newly-formed Cabinet is a mix of technocrats, former ministers from the military-appointed government and Islamists.

In his first legislative decree, Morsi banned the imprisonment of journalists who face trial for inciting hatred, insulting the president, slander and other related offenses.

Panama edges Mexico 2-1 to move on at LLWS

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) ? Edisson Gonzalez pitched a gem to get Panama one step closer to a Little League title.

The 12-year-old Gonzalez had 11 strikeouts and James Gonzalez provided the offense with a two-run homer in the first to lift the team from Aguadulce past Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, 2-1 on Thursday.

Panama will face Japan in a rematch in the international title game Saturday. Tokyo beat Panama 4-1 on Wednesday night.

Mexico starter Ramon Ballina struck out 12, but allowed James Gonzalez's big blast.

Panama manager Luis Gonzalez is a also proud uncle after 12-year-old nephew hit the homer.

"It was a difficult game, but our pitcher did his job," Luis Gonzalez said through a translator. "One pitch decided the game."

Mexico scored in the fifth on Marcelo Perez's RBI single, and had the tying run at second with two outs in the sixth.

But Edisson Gonzalez got a strikeout to end the game.

"I was not nervous in the beginning of the game," he said, "but in the last inning when the first batter got on, I got nervous. (James') home run helped because I'm not having a good tournament at the plate and we needed it to win the game."

After the teams exchanged handshakes at the plate, Edisson Gonzalez made it a point to join several teammates to exchange high-fives one more time with Mexico's disappointed players. He tapped counterpart Ballina, 13, on the shoulder, as the Mexico starter walked back to his dugout to offer kind words and an embrace.

Texas and California played later Thursday for a spot against Tennessee in the U.S. final.

Either team can only hope to get a pitching performance like the one Edisson Gonzalez had against Mexico.

Looking as cool and confident as a big-league ace, Gonzalez consistently worked ahead of the count and didn't allow a runner to get past first until Eduardo Abrego doubled to left in the fifth.

"Yes we can! Yes we can," Mexico's vocal fans yelled in Spanish in trying to urge a comeback.

Perez followed with his solid RBI single to center, but Gonzalez got two strikeouts to end that inning.

Juan Rodriguez had a leadoff single in the sixth and moved to second with two outs on a passed ball. Gonzalez answered again with his final strikeout to complete his five-hitter.

Renowned earlier in the tournament for their power, Mexico hitters struggled at the plate until the final innings. The loss eliminated Mexico.

After beating Curacao on Tuesday, Mexico lost its second game without manager Fernando Rios, who was suspended two games after failing to have all his players take a turn at bat in a 4-3 win earlier this week over Taiwan.

Mexico's manager elected not to speak with reporters after the game.

Sneaky Secrets And Hidden Gems For Weddings

It can be easily said that organizing a wedding is a challenge, filled with options and compromises. In order to make the process a little more manageable, consider these helpful pointers and ensure that your big day will be one to remember forever.

Silk flowers are an attractive alternative to expensive floral arrangements at a wedding. One advantage to silk flowers is the fact that they can be purchased ahead of time and the arrangements can be made prior to your wedding day.

Draft out your ideas and designs for the wedding decor and then shop locally for the items and services you need. You can narrow down your choices by customer service, price, and the ability for them to provide exactly what you need.

Choosing your favorite gown online can be faster and cheaper, but do so well in advance to allot extra time for alterations. However, you should figure in the cost of alterations when calculating your savings. Be sure to work the additional cost for alterations into your overall budget.

If you're having an outdoor reception, tell your caterer. Various foods will need to be judged for their ability to withstand outdoor conditions, such as wind, heat or cold. Fancy serving dishes, with covers, might be an option. If necessary, have a small fridge to keep drinks cold.

In your wedding plans, make sure you consider what types of alcohol you wish to serve, and which ones are most cost effective. Having an open bar can be very expensive if it stays open for hours. Speak with the people at the venue about any alcohol serving options.

Weddings are renowned for their importance in photography and there is often going to be several people who want a chance to be photographed with you. If you don't have a professional photographer and an appropriate schedule, you may end up wasting a good deal of time hunting these people down for the pictures. Make sure your guests know where and when you plan on taking photos with them, and that you have your photographer booked long enough to get all the pictures you need.

Individual centerpieces at each table can quickly add up to a big expense, unless you keep them simple. Rather than buying a huge centerpiece that occupies the entire table, you should purchase a simple one. It won't block the conversation of your guests, will save you some money and yet will still look amazing in your photographs.

Dependent on the state where the wedding is to occur, certain popular flowers, such as those that bloom in your state, might not be easily available especially if they are not in season. Professional florists will be able to help you find blooms in your area that are readily available.

If you want a wedding in Las Vegas, do it. However, if you're hoping for something a little more special or traditional, then the suggestions you've just read should help you put together the wedding of your dreams. Hopefully, you'll be able to look back on you wedding, proudly, forever.

Breaking up is not easy. Do not be too sad. You still stand a chance. Take a look at a review of magic of making up. You can also check out relationship recovery review. Discover how you can convince your boyfriend or girlfriend back now.

What Is the Legal Basis for a Private - Personal Injury Claims

A very good instance which illustrates the legal principles in relation to Private injury is the following. If a individual walks into an is injured by a trap which was set by a second particular person, and activated by an act of the 1st individual such as stepping upon a doormat. In this situation, despite the fact that the 1st individual has been injured by an intentional act of a second individual in setting a trap trespassed would not be accessible as a remedy is to get in touch with getting been activated not by the second individual is that by the 1st persons act would not be a direct but consequential outcome of the second particular person?s intentional act in this sort of situation, as trespass is not offered, the injured plaintiff need to reply upon yet another tort.

Numerous other examples of factual scenarios exactly where an action trespassed the particular person would not be accessible despite the fact that there was an intention to lead to harm can be provided. Unknown to the initial individual, a second particular person place some poise and a cup of tea which is about to be drunk by the 1st particular person and the 1st particular person then drinks it with consequential injury; the second individual intentionally hides the crucial to the very first particular person is medicine chest and the initial particular person consequentially suffers serious physical distress as a outcome of a lack of medication; the second individual deliberately deliberately leaves an object in the path of the very first individual, who is blind, so that the initial particular person is injured by falling into the pit or by colliding with the object. Or the second individual deliberately presses the bell of a bus just as the initial individual, an old lady, is about to get off, with the outcome that the bus begins to move, causing the very first individual to fall onto the road. In all these circumstances, trespassed would not be obtainable and the proper action would be in action on the situation for damages for physical injury. The action need to not be framed in the tort of negligence is a tort is entirely inappropriate circumstances involving conduct that is deliberate or intentional.

A single of the initial instances which created a ward in relation to Private injury was a situation of Bird v Holbrook (1828) four Bing 628. The defendant, who grew tulips and important flower roots in a walled garden some distance from his glowing property, was robbed of flowers and routes from his garden. With the help of yet another man he placed in his garden a spring gun that was set to go off when a individual entered his summerhouse or tulip beds. A peahen belonging to an occupier of a home in the neighbourhood escaped into the defendant?s garden, and the plaintiff at the request of the female servant of the owner of the bird climbed more than the wall fence and jumped into the garden to retrieve the bird. His foot came into make contact with with One particular otherwise attached to the gun discharged huge swan shot into the physique of the plaintiff, causing serious physical injury. The plaintiff brought an action against a defendant in respect of his injuries. The court held in favour of the plaintiff. This is the 1st and most simple instance of how Private injury became a principal of the modern day Law of torts.

Freakonomics ? An Explanation for That Business-Hours-Only Web ...

I blogged yesterday about a Department of State (N.Y.) government website page that only accepts information during business hours. You offered several other similar examples (many of them government sites as well) and possible explanations. We also received, via comment and e-mail, an explanation from Edison Alban, press officer for the D.O.S. (BTW, his name could be considered a pretty good aptonym, since Albany is the capital of New York.)

He begins by objecting to the post, particularly the headline, which was ?This Website Only Open During Business Hours?:

The New York Department of State?s Division of Corporation website is accessible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The Division of Corporation does not shut down its website during non-business hours.

And then he explains the limited access. Those of you who guessed ?batch processing? might be the culprit should take a bow:

Over the last year, the New York Department of State has undertaken a redesign of its business model to better serve our business customers. As of May 2012, most business corporations and limited liability companies required to file corporate periodic forms, also known as Biennial Statements with the Department are able to do so over the internet Monday thru Friday from 6:00am to 7:30pm. So far, more than 30,000 entities have filed their statements using this new feature. Our next step to improve customer service is to make further upgrades to the system to eliminate technical limitations from the old back-end batch-processing system. Once in place, corporations and other business entities will be able to file these periodic statements 24/7.

Male mice exposed to chronic social stress have anxious female offspring

ScienceDaily (Aug. 22, 2012) ? A study in mice conducted by researchers at Tufts University School of Medicine suggests that a woman's risk of anxiety and dysfunctional social behavior may depend on the experiences of her parents, particularly fathers, when they were young.

The study, published online in Biological Psychiatry, suggests that stress caused by chronic social instability during youth contributes to epigenetic changes in sperm cells that can lead to psychiatric disorders in female offspring across multiple generations.

"The long-term effects of stress can be pernicious. We first found that adolescent mice exposed to chronic social instability, where the cage composition of mice is constantly changing, exhibited anxious behavior and poor social interactions through adulthood. These changes were especially prominent in female mice," said first author Lorena Saavedra-Rodr?guez, Ph.D., postdoctoral fellow in the Larry Feig laboratory at Tufts University School of Medicine.

The researchers then studied the offspring of these previously-stressed mice and observed that again female, but not male, offspring exhibited elevated anxiety and poor social interactions. Notably, even though the stressed males did not express any of these altered behaviors, they passed on these behaviors to their female offspring after being mated to non-stressed females. Moreover, the male offspring passed on these behaviors to yet another generation of female offspring.

"We are presently searching for biochemical changes in the sperm of stressed fathers that could account for this newly appreciated form of inheritance" said senior author Larry A. Feig, Ph.D., professor of biochemistry at Tufts University School of Medicine and member of the biochemistry and neuroscience program faculties at the Sackler School of Graduate Biomedical Sciences at Tufts University. "Hopefully, this work will stimulate efforts to determine whether similar phenomena occur in humans."

This research was supported by award numbers MH083324 from the National Institute of Mental Health, and NS047243 from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), both part of the National Institutes of Health. The research was also supported by award number P30NS047243 from NINDS to the Tufts Center for Neuroscience Research.

Roofing System 101: Guidelines in Roof Upkeep

As they are simpler to look over and climb up on, less pricey to refurbish, and much simpler to care for, flat roofs are a preferred kind of framework that most property owners in Toronto like to have in their residences. Flat roofing systems are totally horizontal unlike the standard sloped roof you frequently see in most homes. If you have one atop your residence, and wish to keep its integrity, follow these tips.

    'Ponding'

Flat roofing systems are at risk to 'ponding' because water coming from rain or snow could accumulate and stagnate in pools. If left neglected, this could result in cracks which could cause damage in the house from water entering the structure. Frequently checking and removing the water from the roof every time there's a massive rainfall typically helps.

    Splitting

Due to natural calamities such as typhoons, hails, and downpours, splitting of roofing system components could also be a complication. Splitting could also be the result of bad craftsmanship in the roofing system setup. This could be in the form of rips or cracks present on the parallel joints of the roof's insulation.

    Blistering

You have to keep an eye out for signs of blistering in your flat roof. This develops in the felt layers of the roofing system due to air trapped within the felt, causing it to blister and separate. To address this, you need to engage the services of a flat roof repair Toronto expert. Such an expert can handle any issue of the kind, as they are proficient in determining components in your flat roofing system that need the most attention.

    Membrane Fasteners

Fasteners are what keep your flat roof hanging together. If one of them gets loose, this could have a domino effect on the rest of the fasteners--hence, impacting the structural integrity of your whole roofing system. Detachment can be due to the stress the rood experienced from water saturation. If this occurs, it'll most likely need the services of a flat roofing Toronto expert for the installation of brand-new ones.

    Snow Removal

Excessive snow gathering in your flat roof can cause it to collapse, and threaten your family. Make sure to always remove accumulated snow--particularly if it's currently 12 inches deep. If you're not comfortable shoveling snow, you can consistently ask experts of flat roofs Toronto residents count on to do the job for you. The Root Cause Of Low Back Pain And How To Fix It | Zero To Hero ...

Tuesday, August 21, 2012 by: Dr. Daniel Zagst

    muscle

(NaturalNews) Do you experience bouts of low back pain? Do you notice stiffness and aching moving from a seated to standing position? Do you sit for more than four hours a day? If you answered yes to any or all of these questions, then you may be suffering from tight hip flexor muscles. The muscles that bring your knee to your chest take deep roots in your low back, and can be an underlying cause of low back pain.

The Iliopsoas muscle is the combination of three muscles in your body that converge into one muscle in the thigh. Iliacus, psoas major, and psoas minor originate in the low back and pelvis and connect to the top of the femur. The psoas major muscle begins its attachments in the lumbar spine; where it originates from the vertebrae and discs from L1-L5 before passing down to connect with the other muscles.

Although the anatomy lesson may be boring, the iliopsoas is vital for proper posture and movement. Iliopsoas is the strongest of the hip flexors and is needed for walking, running and standing upright. A common sign of iliopsoas involvement is pain when standing upright from a seated position. The most common cause for tightness in the iliopsoas is a sedentary lifestyle involving long periods of seated posture.

Humans evolved to function more efficiently upright and moving. Unfortunately, sitting for long periods of time has become the norm. While seated, your thighs are at 90 degrees to your torso. This position mimics the action of the iliopsoas muscle, which is flexing the thigh. Since the muscle assumes this position without actively contracting, it picks up the slack in the muscle and tightens up. If you are seated for more than four hours a day, the muscles become accustomed to the seated position as normal. Now, when you stand, you are stretching the muscle in a position it is not used to, causing pain. Since the muscle attaches in the lumbar spine and is stretched, pain is felt in the low back similar to a disc herniation or pulled muscle. The whole time it?s just a muscle that needs to be stretched.

Ideally, a standing workstation and at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise every day would fix the issue, but that isn?t practical for most. Stretching is the next best activity to alleviate symptoms. One of the easiest ways to stretch this muscle is using your bed to assist. Stand along the length of your bed facing the headboard. Place one knee on the bed with the other leg on the ground, using your hand on the bed as a stabilizer; slowly slide your leg on the ground toward the headboard while keeping your back leg on the bed facing the opposite direction. Once you can?t slide any further, try to bring your torso to an upright position. You will get to a point where you feel a deep stretch in the front hip region. Hold it for 10-15 seconds and repeat on the opposite side. This is basically a lunge but is easier to perform and a bit more specific to the iliopsoas. Adding this stretch to your usual routine in the morning and at night can prolong spinal health and eliminate low back pain.

Obama shifts to Ryan education plan

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) ? President Barack Obama drew a sharp line with Republican Mitt Romney on education Tuesday, telling Ohio voters that "putting a college education within reach for working families doesn't seem to be a priority" for his opponent.

Obama quoted his Republican challenger's assertion that the best option for students trying to find an affordable education is to "shop around."

"That's his answer for a young person hoping to go to college ? shop around, borrow money from your parents if you have to ? but if they don't have it, you're on your own," Obama said in prepared remarks ahead of a planned campaign stop Tuesday afternoon.

The president was expected to point to the budget plan put forward by Romney's running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan, as he tries to paint the GOP ticket as too extreme for the nation. He plans to criticize Ryan's budget proposal for cutting $115 billion from the Education Department, removing 2 million children from Head Start programs and costing 1 million college students their Pell Grants over the next decade. The push will be coupled with television ads.

Obama was appearing at Capital University in Columbus and campaigning later in the day at a community college in Reno, Nev.

Ryan is Tuesday's public face of the GOP ticket, with two planned stops in Pennsylvania. Romney was raising money behind closed doors in Louisiana and Texas.

Ryan was holding a morning rally at a steel company in Carnegie and making an afternoon visit to the American Helicopter Museum and Education Center in West Chester. He then was set to fly to Virginia, a state Obama won in 2008 but which is looking more difficult this time around.

The campaign said Ryan would focus Tuesday on the Republican ticket's plans for boosting small businesses. He also plans to address looming defense cuts, which are part of a deal brokered by Obama and congressional leaders of both parties. It was designed to force a deficit agreement, but Congress was unable to come up with a compromise.

Ryan will tell voters that the Republican ticket plans to reverse the defense cuts and replace them with "common sense reforms", though the campaign provided no details on what those would entail.

Obama said Monday he doesn't believe Congress can reach a deal before the November elections that avoids the cuts in military spending, but is he is optimistic that the reductions won't occur.

Since Romney tapped Ryan as his running mate, Democrats have aggressively highlighted what Ryan's budget would mean for Medicare. Ryan's plan would allow those 55 and older to stay in the health care program for seniors as it is currently set up, but would also offer private alternatives for younger workers. That has left some voters skittish.

Students and their parents are the next group Obama hopes to put on notice. The president started radio ads in New Hampshire that claim 21,000 college students in that state would have their Pell Grants cut by $800 each. Another ad tells Ohio voters that 356,000 students would have their Pell Grants cut.

Those estimates assume the cuts in Ryan's budget are applied evenly across all programs starting in 2014 ? something Ryan aides say would not happen. His budget does not directly address Pell Grant funding, and his aides say the cuts would not take a one-size-fits-all approach.

The Democratic National Committee also planned to join the criticism. Officials released a Web video that mocked Romney's suggestion that college students would do better to "shop around" for tuition rates and college loans. The ad suggested that Romney doesn't understand students' struggles to pay for college.

"Students can't afford Mitt Romney," the ad says.

The Ryan budget, which failed to pass the Democratic-controlled Senate, would cut annual nondefense spending by 5 percent in 2013. The next year, it would be a 19 percent cut.

Ryan, who prefers that students take loans instead of receiving grants, would keep the top Pell Grant award in the coming school year at $5,500 but in future years reduce the number of students eligible, not the award sums. In other words, fewer students would receive them but the neediest would not see their awards changed.

More than 9.7 million students are expected to get grants for the academic year that is about to begin.

Ryan's spokesman dismissed the criticism as a distraction from Obama's record. "Under President Obama, the costs of college have skyrocketed ? making it more difficult for students to attend college ? and his economic policies have made it harder for graduates to get jobs," Brendan Buck said. "Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan have a plan for a stronger middle class to get our economy back on track and ensure that young Americans ? and all Americans ? have the brighter future they deserve."

Young voters overwhelmingly favored Obama in 2008, and he continues to enjoy a sizable lead in polls ? although not as wide as four years ago. Their parents are less convinced, and they are as much Obama's audience as their children.

"I think I remember reading something about Ryan trying to cut money for college. Andrew goes back to school pretty soon. We sure need that Pell Grant," a voter says in one ad.

Another announcer continues, "The Romney-Ryan budget plan would cut $14 million in federal education funding for New Hampshire."

Hawks to play home opener on theScore

HAMILTON (August 20, 2012) - Ontario University Athletics (OUA) football returns to theScore Television Network on Saturday, September 8, marking the 11th season of University Rush coverage. theScore will broadcast six regular season and four playoff games, all leading up to the 105th Yates Cup presented by Pioneer Energy on November 10, featuring the belairdirect halftime show.?

The University Rush season kicks off under the lights as the Queen's Gaels travel to Waterloo to take on the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks on Saturday, September 8 at 8 p.m. The second week clash marks the first University Rush game since 2008 to be played at night. In the 2011 quarter-final the Gaels were responsible for ending the Golden Hawks season in a low scoring affair that was decided on a fourth-quarter rushing touchdown. The 14-10 decision sent Coach Sheahan and his tri-coloured squad into the Yates Cup semifinal against eventual Vanier Cup winner McMaster.

Queen's returns to the schedule the following Saturday when they host the Western Mustangs at Richardson Stadium. The Gaels shut out the Mustangs 37-0 last season in week eight, a game that was essentially meaningless for the guaranteed first place 'Stangs. The lopsided victory marked the first time since 1973 that Western University football had been held scoreless. But when they meet on September 15, the game will be anything but insignificant and University Rush fans should expect an exciting tilt showcasing one of the oldest rivalries in the league.?

The first of three University Rush Homecoming games featured on theScore has Toronto visiting Guelph in the new and improved Alumni Stadium on Saturday, September 22. The following week McMaster travels to London to take on the Western Mustangs in a rematch of the 104th Yates Cup final. Following a break for Thanksgiving, the Marauders return to theScore and play host to 2011 upstart Windsor on Saturday, October 13.?

Toronto managed a surprise 21-12 victory over the visiting Guelph Gryphons last season at Varsity Stadium, but this year the tables will be turned. The Varsity Blues will travel into the belly of the beast, taking on the Gryphons in front of a hostile Homecoming crowd.?

OUA football fans should mark September 29th on their calendars as the most highly anticipated matchup of 2012 comes live to University Rush on theScore. Pioneer Energy Male Athlete of the Year Kyle Quinlan (South Woodslee, Ont.) and the McMaster Marauders are coming off a Cinderella season in 2011 that saw them capture the first national title in school history. With limited key losses on the roster, McMaster is looking for a repeat performance. The Mustangs and Marauders split results in 2011. The Mustangs muscled their way to a 48-21 win in week two before the Marauders came away with a 41-19 win in the 104th Yates Cup.

Following the Thanksgiving break, 2011 OUA Coach of the Year Joe D'Amore and the Windsor Lancers will travel to Hamilton to take on McMaster in front of a packed Homecoming crowd. Though the Lancers didn't win a Vanier Cup like their maroon opponents, 2011 was a banner year for the program. The Lancers posted a 5-3 record and had two post season appearances, which was their most successful season since 2006. Windsor gave McMaster trouble the last time these two teams met and the Marauders were lucky to come away with a two point win. Fans should tune in live to see the two best quarterbacks OUA has to offer as Windsor's Austin Kennedy (Windsor, Ont.) goes up against Quinlan.?

The OUA regular season concludes on Saturday, October 20 with five games that will no doubt have playoff implications. Week eight will feature a key game for post-season positioning, and will be announced at a later date.?

OUA alum Donnovan Bennett returns to the booth for his second season, and this year hell be joined by a new face as theScores Simon Bennett takes over the play-by play calls.?

"I am very excited and honoured to be the new voice of University Rush," said Bennett. "theScore was the first to show guys like Jesse Lumsden and Andy Fantuz before they became big-time pros. When you look at how quickly a kid like Shamawd Chambers made an impact in the CFL, you really see how top notch the talent is. I have already seen first-hand that there many good people involved with OUA football and I can't wait to tell their stories to the rest of Canada."

theScore's Laura Diakun and Andy Baechler will kick off and wrap up each game from the studio. The pair will cover the upcoming matchup, and discuss OUA and CIS football action across the country.

Paul Brothers will complete the on air theScore crew on the sidelines in his first season as University Rush host.
