BATON ROUGE ? She does not have the stellar resume of Alabama coach Patrick Murphy, but new LSU softball coach Beth Torina is clearly on the rise.
Torina, who rebuilt the Florida International softball program and led it to its finest season in 2010 with a 38-21 record and NCAA Regional victory, was named LSU's new softball coach on Monday.
Less than two weeks ago, Murphy accepted the LSU job, only to change his mind and return to Alabama days later.
"We are extremely excited to welcome Beth to LSU and for her to take the leadership reigns of our softball program," LSU Athletic Director Joe Alleva said. "She brings great passion, energy and character to our program and will wear the purple and gold with pride."
LSU will introduce Torina, 32, at 1 p.m. press conference Wednesday on campus.
Torina, a two-time Sun Belt Conference coach of the year, inherited a program that went 22-35 overall and 10-16 in the Sun Belt in 2007. Her first team went 29-34 and broke even in the conference at 13-13. A 31-29 and 13-11 season followed before the breakthrough season in 2010 at the Miami school. She was 129-111 in four seasons at FIU.
Torina replaces Hall of Fame coach Yvette Girouard, who retired at the end of last season.
Before landing the FIU job, Torina was an assistant coach for six seasons at Houston under Kyla Holas, who was a candidate for the LSU job as well. Torina was a star pitcher at Florida in the late 1990s when Holas was an assistant coach there.
Torina began her coaching career at Stetson University in DeLand, Fla., from 2000-02.
