Food Price Increase The Concern Of Ethiopian News | Everarticle

This article has been viewed 0 times.

Recently in Ethiopian news, the local government removed the price cap on basic food items. Unfortunately, this has caused a steep increase in the cost of common food items. Citizens are finding it difficult to pay the cost for basic necessities, and now many are having to go without.

The local government has stated that the reason for the increased prices is the rising costs of international food items. However, others argue that the removal of the government price caps are to blame. Items such as meat, bread, and oil have doubled in price. This has left many civilians unable to buy basic essentials.

Experts continue to argue the cause. Many point towards the governments current money printing issue. Historically, the excess printing of money has led to high inflation rates, a pattern that the government is currently repeating. Money has also been directed towards government funded infrastructure projects. Numerous buildings and roads have been developed to the despair of the civilian population.

There is a history of citizens needing government food aide. Before the removal of the price cap over 3.2 million citizens relied on the government for food aide. Inflation is now at a historic high of thirty-five percent, a significant increase from the past years. It is estimated that the inflation coupled with no government intervention will leave over 5 million civilians dependent on government supplied food aide. Civilians are already displaying discontent with the high costs.

Normally, Ethiopians are passive. However, the fact that they are voicing their concerns by creating a text message campaign is quite unusual. They are organizing to boycott certain products and trying to force merchants to lower prices. These complaints have had an effect on the merchants, yet they cannot afford to lower their prices. It appears as though they are at an impasse.

Unfortunately, both sides are seeing significant effects because of the major increases in food cost. The merchants cannot make a profit if they lower their prices. On the other hand, the civilians cannot pay the asking prices. This food shortage along with inflation makes it near impossible for the parties to meet with a compromise. Even the government has been of little assistance to the negotiations.

There is much going on in Ethiopian news, and many sources to read. All make it clear that the rising cost of food is the main concern. Food shortages, drought, and government spending have only worsened the issue of inflation. More and more citizens will be added to the list of government food aide as many will be going without the basics. Read more about: ethiopian news
