Hybrid Rasta Mama: Chilld Organics Boyo Doll Giveaway (02/12 ...

Welcome to my FIRST giveaway in celebration of one year of blogging! This is a really special giveaway from a company that just warms my heart.

ChildOrganics is a small family business that focuses on Children?s Organic Products. They strongly believe in nurturing your family naturally and have worked hard to bring you products to help you do just that. While cloth diapers are not all they sell, that is where they started. Today ChildOrganics offers everything from Waldorf dolls to wood toys/games/puzzles, to mama care, to baby care, to clothing, to mattresses, to every babywearing option imaginable! ChildOrganics is truly a one-stop shop!
The website is rich with links, articles, and virtual support for all parents. They even have some great recipes for wipes, teething crackers, and play dough.

Erica, one of the owners of Child Organics, was kind enough to sit down and answer a few questions for me. Before I reveal the giveaway item (which is amazing) please take a moment to learn more about her and her great company!

On your website?s About Us page you briefly discuss your desire to be a stay at home mom as the motivation behind starting ChildOrganics. Since you launched your business in almost 10 years ago, what ups and downs have you encountered running your own business and balancing motherhood?

There have been lots of ups and downs along the way. ?We started ChildOrganics because I didn?t want to go back to my full time job. ?I couldn?t imagine leaving my baby girl all day with someone else. It seems like it would just be impossible to me. The business started out great with lots of help from my husband. ?We expanded our business to include childbirth classes with both my husband and I being Certified.? Things changed a bit with the birth of our second daughter. She only lived a short time, 16 months, she was born with?Walker Warburg Syndrome. Of course the business took a backseat through those rough years. While we were able to keep the business running, some aspects of the business suffered. ?For exampIe, I had an almost three year break in my blogging. ?Since then we?ve had another little bundle of joy, so we?re chasing him around quite a bit these days. Now we homeschool, which demands its own focus.? It?s all about flexibility. I?m very thankful that working from home allows for this. Now, I tend work a lot with ChildOrganics after the kids are in bed.

What moment from any of your children?s lives are you sure you would have missed had you not been able to stay home with them?

There are the big moments, like the first word and the first steps. But with my oldest I remember the first time she was covered from head to toe in mud exploring outside, it gave me such a thrill. With Bella I wouldn?t want to have been away from her for one day since she was with us for such a short time. Working from home allowed me to visit her daily in the NICU for the months that she was there. ?She rolled over once in her whole life and she smiled so rarely they were like treasures each time. I have the greatest memory of her ?singing? one time, she was never very vocal but this one time she was ?singing? and I?m so thankful not to have missed those moments. Now my youngest just turned three and has become a chatterbox. He is saying things on a daily basis that has me in stitches sometimes, I?m so glad I?m home to hear his T-rex roars and his funny take on things. He has recently begun to say the prayers before our meals. They are quite special to say the least, I?m so thankful I?m not missing those!

How do you ensure the highest quality of products for your customers?

It was very important to us to work with ethical companies. We wanted the highest quality of organic products that were fair trade and environmentally friendly. Most of the companies we work with go above and beyond to be sure their workers are making a living wage and provide them with a safe working environment. This is important to us. We also work with a lot of small family businesses. ChildOrganics was a means for me to stay at home with my family so we like the idea of support other families trying to do the same. We have used most of the products we carry, we wanted to pick products that we love and share them with others that are concerned about the best for their children and the planet.

What are your most popular items?

Our eco-lambskin is our top seller, followed closely by the machine washable sheepskin for baby. Our sheepskin products have been? our ?top sellers for the past few years. They are so versatile. A family will buy one for home, then come back and buy another to keep at Grandma?s house. They require very little care, and they seem last forever!

What are your personal favorite items?

I LOVE the Keptin, Jr. dolls. Each of my children had a different one. I?ve treasured them as keepsakes.? They are great to chew for teething babies because they are made from organic wool and cotton and they are so easy to love. It was one of the first things I had in the NICU with my daughter, Bella. I slept with it a few nights to give it my scent, then left it with her while we were away. It made me feel like I was leaving a bit of love behind with her. They are the perfect lovey!

What advice do you have for mothers who are balancing a career (however that looks) and motherhood, especially with a child who has special needs? I know your journey with your daughter ended far too early but nonetheless, you walked a very difficult road doing both.

It often doesn?t look balanced at all. I guess that?s my first bit of advice. Don?t expect to be able to do it all, you can?t! Sometimes your business will have to be put on the back burner so you can focus on your family. Sometimes you?ll have to stay up too late at night to get things taken care of with your business or finishing up the laundry. You do the best you can with what you have at the moment. Having a support team is essential. A husband that is willing to return a few phone calls, or fix glitches on the website is priceless. A mother that will come over and let you take a bath while she sets with the kids can save your sanity. If you are dealing with a special needs child on top of all of the other responsibilities of being a parent and running a business, then you really need to be able to accept the fact you have limits and ACCEPT HELP when someone offers. Be gracious, be grateful, and remember it?s ok to ask for help when you?re doing all you can to keep your head above water.

And the moment you have all been waiting for?

ChildOrganics is offering one lucky reader a Boyo doll made by Keptin, Jr. This simple and adorable doll is made with 100% organic cotton and filled with pure wool. Made in Lithuania. ?Retails for $33.50

Feds deport woman to Mexico, activists had rallied

By msnbc.com staff and news services

Federal immigration authorities have deported a 22-year-old woman from Ohio over the objections of activists who feared she could be suicidal if sent back to Mexico.

According to The Cincinnati Enquirer, Yanelli Hernandez was returned to Mexico on Tuesday. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials said her removal was ordered by an immigration judge. She was in the country illegally and was convicted in Butler County on charges of driving under the influence and forgery.

Supporters said that, Hernandez, a factory worker, had attempted suicide twice, and immigration rights activists phoned federal offices this week to urge that she be allowed to stay.

An ICE letter denying her request to stay said there was no documentation to support claims that she faced hardships from longstanding mental illness.

Activist Marco Saaverda, an organizer with the Ohio?chapter of DreamActivist.org and a?friend of Hernandez?s,?told the?Enquirer he felt??extreme frustration. ... We will pursue all of the mental health concerns that this case has revealed.?

The woman had been in the United States since age 13. She had been living in the Cincinnati area for five years.

"She needs treatment and not to be deported to Mexico, where she knows nobody," Fernanda Marroquin, an organizer with DreamActivist Pennsylvania, told Philadelphia Daily News?on Monday.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

DC eyes Watchmen, plans prequels to 1986 series (AP)

PHILADELPHA ? More than a quarter of a century after "Watchmen" intrigued readers with tales of less-than-heroic and all-too-human ? save for Dr. Manhattan ? crime-fighting vigilantes, DC Entertainment is revisiting them in a series of original prequels this summer.

The publisher of DC Comics said Wednesday that it will launch seven interlocking and inter-connected miniseries ? each focusing on a specific character ? as it revisits the world first and last seen in the 1986-1987 12-issue series written by Alan Moore and illustrated by Dave Gibbons, which has remained a staple of critics and consumers and a near-constant best-selling graphic novel.

"It's our responsibility as publishers to find new ways to keep all of our characters relevant," DC Entertainment co-publishers Dan DiDio and Jim Lee said in a statement. "After 25 years, the Watchmen are classic characters whose time has come for new stories to be told. We sought out the best writers and artists in the industry to build on the complex mythology of the original."

Moore is not participating, but Gibbons noted that their original series was "the complete story that Alan Moore and I wanted to tell. However, I appreciate DC's reasons for this initiative and the wish of the artists and writers involved to pay tribute to our work."

In that vein, the publisher said that the writers and artists bringing the miniseries about Rorschach, Dr. Manhattan, Nite Owl, Ozymandias, Silk Spectre, Comedian and the Minutemen include writers Len Wein, who edited the original series; Darwyn Cooke; Brian Azzarello and J. Michael Straczynski. Artists include Amanda Conner, Andy and Joe Kubert, Adam Hughes, Jae Lee, J.G. Jones, Lee Bermejo and Cooke.

Wein, who is writing "Ozymandias," is also penning a two-page backup feature in each of the series dubbed "The Curse of the Crimson Corsair," which is illustrated by John Higgins, who did the colors on the original "Watchmen" series.

"'The Curse of the Crimson Corsair' was actually my idea when we first started talking about doing these new stories," Wein said. "Since, in the world of the Watchmen, DC stopped doing superhero comics early on and started a line of pirate comics instead, I thought it might be fun to see what one of the other books in the line looked like."

That's akin to the similar pirate comic that played out in the pages of "Watchmen" that Moore wrote called "Tales of the Black Freighter,'" Wein said. "'Crimson Corsair' introduces a new character to follow from the beginning of his adventure to its grisly end. I must say I'm having a lot of fun getting creeped out by what I'm writing here."

Higgins said he and Wein have kept the sense of foreboding and darkness that permeated the "Black Freighter" story.

"What we are trying to achieve with the Crimson Corsair pages within the regular new series is to create a graphic `buffer' and to use the darkness of the Crimson Corsair stories as a literary counterpoint to the regular book," he said.

Looking ahead, Higgins said that even though the Watchmen has become a touchstone for comics and graphic novels, the new series can expand on its mythology.

"The challenge is to make the stories modern and relevant to 2012 and to show what can be done with respect and consideration for the source material that has inspired so many people over the years. By adding to the mythos and not to detract from it," he said. "'The Watchmen' had such an influence on graphic storytelling since it first appeared and is a timeless classic. If we can create a new set of stories that can be enjoyed 25 years on, that would be an achievement and a reward in itself."

Sky will launch an internet based TV service in the UK in the first half of 2012

UK pay TV service Sky has just announced its quarterly results, and despite adding 100,000 subscribers as well as notching its "highest ever first-half adjusted operating profit" it will launch a new internet TV service, available to anyone in the country with a broadband connection. Sky describes the new over the top (OTT) service as being aimed at the 13 million UK households who don't currently subscribe to pay TV, with access available via "PC, laptop, tablet, smartphone, games console or connected TV." Initially, it will offer Sky Movies on demand joined by sports and entertainment options later, with access based on either monthly unlimited subscription or "pay-as-you-go" pricing. As far as the company's basic services, it will continue to develop its existing Sky Go product for standard pay-TV subscribers and zeebox iPad companion app, although this seems to initially be a worth competitor for things like Lovefilm and recent UK entrant Netflix. We have plenty of questions about what it will offer cord-cutters and cord-nevers in the UK when it launches in the first half of this year, we should find out more on the earnings call shortly. Until then, hit the PDF link for more detailed financial breakdowns, or check out the IPTV service press release after the break.

Update: Still waiting for Sky Go on Android? The company mentioned during its presentation that the app will finally arrive on Google's platform in February. It will also have new channels, including Sky 1, Sky Living and Sky Arts, plus, of course, the new Sky Sports F1 HD channel. The company is also expanding its broadband reach, with plans to cover a million more homes by June 2013, and add a Sky Broadband Unlimited Fibre option. For 20 a month, it offers 40 megabit download speed with no usage caps based on BT Fibre.

[OOC] Important NPC Board

Forum rules
This forum is for OOC discussion about existing roleplays.

Please post all "Players Wanted" threads in the Roleplayers Wanted forum!

This topic is an Out Of Character part of the roleplay, ?Blood on the Thames?. Anything posted here will also show up there.

Topic Tags:

Forum for completely Out of Character (OOC) discussion, based around whatever is happening In Character (IC). Discuss plans, storylines, and events; Recruit for your roleplaying game, or find a GM for your playergroup.

This is a thread to add all of your pertinent NPCs for your gangs. Don't worry about adding throngs of "Red Shirts" that are just going to get slaughtered in any combat. Those are assumed. Here you add the NPCs that are important to your character, ones that you don't want to have killed off at a regular basis, unless you want to come in here constantly and rewrite your NPC post to take out the old and put in the new ones. *shrugs* That's on you, I guess...
