Washington Monument lighting ceremony to take place July 8

The Washington Monument will glow once again Monday night.

The National Park Service says that the monument, which is encased in scaffolding while major repairs to the structure are done, will be lighted up at 8 p.m. on July 8.

A special ceremony will be held at the base of the monument to mark the lighting.

More than a monument, the tribute to George Washington is one of the centerpieces of the District. NPS spokeswoman Carol Johnson says that they seriously considered flipping the switch on the 4th of July, but financial and security issues ended that plan quickly.

"We did not want to overshadow the fireworks, which is the highlight of the year on the Mall," Johnson said.

This will not be the first time the Washington Monument will be illuminated during construction. Officials did the same thing in 1999 during a period of repairs as well.

While many have griped and moaned at the months-long presence of the scaffolding, which is due to stay up through next spring, some visitors and residents alike say that the upcoming lighting will bring its aura back.

"I was nervous that it wouldn't look nice, but it looked just great with the fireworks," tourist Danielle Barnvos, who took in Thursday's festivities with her husband and three children, said. "Now it'll stand alone after the 4th with the lights."

The Washington Monument has been closed for nearly two years after the August 2011 earthquake caused and exposed cracks and other damage to the structure.
