A wave of new Kindle Fire tablets is set to roll out this fall, according to?a report from BGR. Display upgrades to the larger Kindle Fire HD may lead to a screen that rivals the retina-display iPads in level of detail.
BGR states that Amazon will maintain its three-Kindle Fire spread this fall, with a regular non-HD Kindle Fire, a 7-inch Kindle Fire HD, and an 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD. The lowest-end version, which currently has a 1024?600 display, will be bumped to 1280?800. That brings it into HD territory.
The higher-end 7-inch model?s display bump will bring it up to 1920?1200, while the 8.9-inch model will reportedly get a 2560?1600 screen. This would be both more pixels and a higher pixel density than that of Apple?s current 9.7-inch iPad, which has a 9.7-inch screen at 2048?1536 resolution.
Amazon has a fairly strong hold on mind share with its Kindle brand, but our annoyance with the Fires? forked version of Android has?soured our impression of the tablet in the past. The OS tends to be slow and jerky, and the independent app store leaves us yearning for stock Android. Amazon needs to recognize this problem and either put a lot more effort into its fork or revert to a less stylized version of Android.
Screen resolution has replaced processor power as the spec rat race du jour, but Amazon has a lot more work to do beyond hardware to make its Kindle tablets into compelling products. Stock Android isn?t a magic bullet, as neither Samsung nor Google itself have attained incredible sales figures with their straighter tablets. But Amazon could be positioned for an avalanche of sales if it can finally get the interface right.
