EU cracking down on card payment fees

BRUSSELS (AP) ? The European Union's Commission is proposing legislation to cap some credit and debit card fees.

The 28-nation bloc's executive arm says limiting the fees paid by retailers to banks every time a consumer uses a card will result in annual savings of 6 billion euros ($7.9 billion) and lead to lower prices.

The so-called interchange fees would be capped at 0.2 percent of a transaction's value for debit cards and 0.3 percent for credit cards. The proposal still needs approval by the European Parliament and member countries.

Mastercard Inc. has warned the cap could lead to higher card fees for consumers, but EU Commissioner Michel Barnier dismissed that as an "unbearable campaign" of disinformation.

Separately, the Commission, as the EU's competition watchdog, is investigating fees charged by Mastercard and Visa.

Google reportedly pitching streaming online TV service to multiple media companies

Streaming online television services appears to be the next big thing in the Valley -- at least, if you ask Google, Apple, Intel and other tech giants that are considering making a move in that direction. According to the Wall Street Journal, Google has approached several media companies about licensing TV channels for such a service, which involves offering cable TV-like channel packages over broadband. This wouldn't be the first time we've seen the folks at Mountain View putting feelers out, as the company opened up discussions with media companies two years ago. Nothing came of them, of course, but it's hard to say if the current conversations will meet the same fate -- a couple years is a long time in the industry, and things may be different enough to merit a more appealing offer on either side, especially given the rise of Netflix, Roku, Amazon Instant and others. A report from the New York Times indicates that these talks are still likely preliminary and not anywhere close to a deal, so we shouldn't anticipate watching new TV shows live on our Google TV anytime soon.

Nissan's Golf competitor spied for the first time

Our spies have grabbed on camera Nissan's upcoming Volkswagen Golf rival which has been confirmed for a 2014 launch.

It will be a replacement in Europe for the rather unpopular Tiida and promises to adopt some styling influences seen on the 2012 Invitation Concept. Judging by the extremely familiar appearance of this prototype which looks a lot like the 2013 Pulsar / Tiida hatchback, this is possibly (and hopefully) a test mule to hide a completely different design.

Nissan previously said the new model will get the firm's V-grille and the front fascia will be a "little bit leftfield, a little bit edgy." It will forgo the Tiida moniker in favor of a familiar name which will "evoke something from the past."

The C-segment hatchback will be built in Barcelona, Spain where Nissan is investing more than 130M EUR to prepare the plant for the new model. At the same facility they will boost output of the Navara (aka Frontier) and make transmissions for the Leaf and eNV200.

A public debut of the Golf rivaling-Nissan could occur in September at the Frankfurt Motor Show, before the car goes on sale in early 2014.

Dick Diaz attempts a hole-in-one to win the vehicle behind him, a 2013 GMC Terrain, on Saturday during the Burger Time Golf Tournament. The 20th Annual Burger Time Tournament concluded Saturday at Sonoma Ranch Golf Course.

LAS CRUCES - The Burger Time Golf Tournament, bringing people together since 1993.

The 20th Burger Time "Sandra B. McGrath" Golf Tournament concluded Saturday at Sonoma Ranch Golf Course. The final day was highlighted by a marriage proposal, a hole-in-one and the presence of former Mayfield football coach Jim Bradley.

Alfonso Montes, 38, and Denise Corrales, 27, have been dating for three years and have a three-month old child.

"It was her birthday this weekend and we had our baby on April 10 so I thought I would propose to her on the 10th hole," Montes said.

Montes placed the engagement ring in the hole on the 10th green, proposing after Corrales found the ring in the hole.

"He told me to come over to see something and I thought it was going to be a snake or something," Corrales said. "I was very surprised. I had no idea."

Henry Apodaca, Michael Burton, Ryan Hefley and Tony Aldo have played together in the Burger Time for 10 of the 20 years. Playing for Mac's Meats on Saturday, Apodaca notched his second hole-in-one of the summer on Saturday, knocking in an ace on the Par 3 third hole with an eight iron.

"We were all born and raised in Las Cruces and what (Burger Time owner) Kevin McGrath and his team has done is remarkable," Apodaca said. "It's a great community effort

and we have fun every year."

McGrath presented a check for $299,000 to Las Cruces Public Schools on Friday from this year's tournament. McGrath said nearly 550 players participated in this year's event.

Although he wasn't walking the course this year, Bradley's presence at Sonoma Ranch didn't go unnoticed.

"He has been out here three times this weekend," said McGrath of the New Mexico high school coaching legend. "He has been such an important part of this event. It is important for him to be out here and know that he's loved by the community."

As the Burger Time tournament has progressed, it has grown to involve all high school sports and activities, although it began as a fundraiser for the football programs at Mayfield High, Las Cruces High and O?ate.

All three football teams raise between $10,000 to $15,000 per year -- a fact not lost on the players who enjoy the benefits of the tournament in the fall.

"It helps us a lot for everything from food to the new gloves or shoes we get every season from freshmen all the way up to varsity," O?ate senior running back Isaiah Fielder said. "The $10,000 is a lot of money and been really important for our program. It's also fun being out here and talking to all of these people."
