Submitted 2012-02-02 03:16:47 Many people are looking for a way to make their home more comfortable and inviting. The rooms most chosen for refreshing are the kitchen and bathroom. While they may have replaced the appliances, fixtures, and decorations, they may still want something a little more because somehow the room doesn't appear to be finished. That is when the idea of cabinet resurfacing emerges. Cabinet resurfacing is a way to transform a room to suit your tastes and has several benefits.

One benefit is that resurfacing is quicker, cleaner, and less costly than complete cabinet replacement. In order to replace cabinets, the old ones must be removed from the wall and new ones installed in its place. The removal process would involve creating a lot of dust and debris and a large portion of the kitchen or bathroom, if not the entire room, would have to be closed off to traffic for an extended amount of time. The old cabinets would have to be discarded, requiring the need to rent a dumpster. The new cabinets have to be ordered and delivered to the worksite, and depending upon the cabinet chosen that wait may be range from days to weeks. Then after the new cabinets arrive, time must be spent on installing them. Throughout the entire process, several rounds of cleaning must be done to prevent dust and debris from entering the home ventilation system or contaminating the work area. The cost involved in cabinet replacement would be much higher than resurfacing since you would be outlaying for brand new cabinets and not just the materials needed to resurface the old ones.

Another benefit would be flexibility. Replacing cabinets would more than likely involve driving to a home improvement store and choosing from a catalog of available cabinet designs, away from the room that you are planning to improve. The cabinet choices that the stores have may not convey the look you want to convey. Some may even not give you the option of interchanging hardware or the ability to add or remove components and appliances. When you opt to resurface, you can choose which part of your cabinets you want to change. You can choose to change the surface but keep the hardware. You can just change the hardware and choose to keep the current finish. You can choose to remove or add cabinets or to add appliances such as a dishwasher, a small wine cooler, or a second refrigerator in the current cabinets.

The main reason a lot of people resurface cabinets is because they want to increase the resale value of their homes. It has been shown that homes that have the kitchen or bathroom remodeled has been able to command a higher sales price than a home that has had no improvements. Since they want to get the best return on the sale, they could opt for cabinet resurfacing versus replacing in order to save money and receive a larger proceed from the sale.

Cabinet resurfacing has benefits that are worth considering to any homeowner who is interested in saving money, time, and expressing their individuality.
