Used Games Unusable on Microsoft's Next-Gen Xbox Console ...

It has been touched on?before, but this time it may become a reality. Microsoft is considering the implementation of a new technology in their next version of the popular gaming console known as the Xbox. While it would certainly benefit the company though an increase in revenue, it will end up angering many of thier loyal gamers. To put it simply, it would ban the use of used games in their next console.

?So what? What does this mean for me??

I?m sure many of you have been in the situation where you are going to your firends house to play video games, and so you bring your favorite multiplayer that he or she doesn?t have. Imagine doing that with Microsoft?s new console, and seeing an ?Unreadable Disk? error upon putting the game in (That is, if games are even still on disk at that point, but I?ll save that for another blog). That?s right, each individual person will have to buy a new copy of every game, every time, for every console. No more borrowing your best friend?s games or even playing on your sisters console on the good TV downstairs? You can even say goodbye to GameStop.

Problems Already

I have already run into a similar, maybe worse (you decide), situation at a friends house. He just purchased a new game: Battlefield 3, and invited me over to play. He told me to play a little on my own in single player mode just to get a feel for the game. Mind you, we were on his console and using his game that had worked fine for him. I then logged into my account and the game instantly started complaining. It was not going to let me play until I entered the code that came with the packaging. Problem is, my friend had already used the code on his account. No problem, the message said, you can buy a new code. In effect, this eliminates the possability of the game being re-sold, let alone given away. The game is usless for each uniqe player unless they send money to the developer.

Mixed?Reactions?from the Big Guys

Many developers were on board with the idea. Why wouldn?t they be? After all, it means more money in thier pockets. Additionaly, developers have a reputation for expressing their unhappiness with the amount of money they get for the amount of work they do, while placing the cause on used game buying. Developers don?t get money when player re-sell thier games. However, a few developer companies (quite large companies, too) had a different opinion. CD Projekt, the developer for a game called The Witcher 2, says it is not the fault of the gamer. ?CD Projekt said that if a game doesn?t make a lot of money, it?s the developer?s fault. The guy who goes to GameStop to save a few bucks isn?t the one to blame.? I?m sure you?ve heard of Halo, too. CEO Matthew Karch of Saber Interactive, Halo?s current developer, shares a simmilar feeling: ?I don?t think we should prevent people from playing used games. I understand why they would want to do it, but I think the approach should be different.?

What do you think should happen?
