Who won the final presidential debate between President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney? The two men faced off in Boca Raton, Florida tonight with Bob Schieffer playing the moderator. But across the internet and the Twitterverse, there was another contest that played out in tweets, hashtags, and memes.
Soon after the debate started, the hashtag #obamastare started popping up as viewers noticed the piercing look the president gave Romney across the split screen when the GOP nominee was talking. And after Romney made the claim that the Navy was smaller than in the distant past and Obama responded that the country also has fewer ?horses and bayonets,? the phrase immediately won traction on Twitter. Twitter also had some fun after Romney claimed that Obama said he?d meet all ?the world?s worst actors? in his first year. By worst actors, Romney meant rogue-type states, but wags imagined Obama meeting the likes of Taylor Momsen.
There was also some debate about the way the debaters pronounced ?Pakistan.? ??I like the way Romney says ?Pakistan? better,? Kristen Schaal tweeted.
Liz Heron, Director of Social Media and Engagement at the Wall Street Journal, tweeted that there were ?6.5 million #debates tweets tonight, per @gov. Most-tweeted moment was #horsesandbayonets, at 105,767 tweets per minute.?
Here?s what some notable people said about the debate, and some takes on who probably won:
