Cast iron radiators have a chic, defined look, quite stylish and classy and very much elegant.

Together with this great look is the ability of the radiators to produce good performance with efficiency. The make of the product is based upon advanced technology thus making it possible to function with high performance. Thus, there is an aesthetic appeal to it to the much view treat of others. This basically means that the radiator not only heats up your home but it also adds beauty and design to the home. It?s like hitting two birds with a single stone.

Do you want to buy a cast iron radiator? If it is your first time getting one, it is best to buy one that is used. Number one reason for this is that they are cheaper and more budget-friendly than the new ones. Pre-owned cast iron radiators allow you to save up to 25% of the cost of brand new radiators. Also, used radiators that are not-that-new models are much easier to operate than the brand new ones. Plus, recent models are also hard to assemble and figure out especially since they are manufactured in other countries. Cast iron radiators that are already used are usually made domestically so they have easy and understandable instructions in them.

Although the used cast iron?radiators?are very advantageous, they also have their disadvantages. There are times that the buyer may find to his or her utter dismay that the radiator bought is too old and the spares are out of stock. Other times too, the radiators become really problematic even after a single use. Thus you must weigh in these pros and cons before deciding on buying a brand new or used cast iron radiator.

Arsenal, Man City respond to Euro woes to EPL wins

Associated Press Sports

updated 5:18 p.m. ET Oct. 27, 2012

LONDON (AP) - Manchester City and Arsenal responded to midweek Champions League setbacks with unconvincing 1-0 wins in the English Premier League on Saturday.

Carlos Tevez secured City's victory over Swansea, putting the champions a point behind Chelsea before the leaders host Manchester United on Sunday.

"They sat quite deep and made it difficult for us to get the ball forward," City midfielder Gareth Barry said.

It took Mikel Arteta's late goal for Arsenal to overcome winless, 10-man Queens Park Rangers and rise to fourth - seven points behind Chelsea.

While Arsenal's attack lacked cutting edge, the team was boosted by midfielder Jack Wilshere successfully returning after 17 months out of competitive action.

"It's been a long journey but I'm back now ... we didn't underestimate QPR and knew they were going to be strong, especially from midfield and the wingers," the 20-year-old Englishman said.

The match at Etihad Stadium was the longest since the Premier League's inception in 1992, with more than 12 minutes of stoppage time after potentially serious injuries to Swansea goalkeeper Michel Vorm and City defender Micah Richards led to them being carried off during the second half.

Vorm is set to be out for up to six weeks, Swansea manager Michael Laudrup said.

The only goal came in the 61st minute, with Tevez sending the dipping shot into the bottom corner of the net beyond Vorm, who was injured while stretching to save.

Richards was later running down the pitch when he went down in agony holding his right knee. After receiving oxygen on the pitch he was carried off.

At Emirates Stadium, Arteta's winner came four minutes after QPR defender Stephane M'Bia was sent off in the 80th for kicking out at Thomas Vermaelen while on the ground after being fouled by the rival defender.

Olivier Giroud's initial header from Andrei Arshavin's cross was saved by Cesar but Arteta pounced to head against the bar and he prodded the rebound into the net.

The win lifted some of the gloom after successive losses in the league and Champions League.

"I am very happy with the result because we lost two big games and you could see the confidence was a bit jaded," manager Arsene Wenger said. "But we were serious and we moved the ball quite well. We needed to be patient."

Wigan emerged victorious for the first time at home this season as West Ham was beaten 2-1.

Ivan Ramis volleyed Wigan in front in the 8th and James McArthur's goal early in the second half proved decisive as James Tomkins pulled one back for West Ham in stoppage time.

There was also a late goal at Reading, with Hal Robson-Kanu retrieving a 3-3 draw with Fulham - the fourth goal in the last 13 minutes.

Reading remains in the relegation zone, clear of Southampton on goal difference and a point ahead of QPR.

Aston Villa and Norwich are just out of the drop zone after drawing 1-1.

Stoke endured a 0-0 draw with Sunderland but extended its unbeaten home run in the league to 11 matches.

---

BERLIN (AP) - Borussia Dortmund won 2-0 at Freiburg to get its Bundesliga title defense back on track in difficult conditions on Saturday.

Heavy snowfall hampered both teams in a hard-fought game.

Neven Subotic scored in the 54th minute and Mario Goetze made the game safe for Dortmund with seven minutes remaining.

Jefferson Farfan's 77th-minute strike was enough for Schalke to complete a perfect week with a 1-0 win at home over Nuremberg. Schalke won the Ruhr derby against Dortmund last weekend and then 2-0 at Arsenal in the Champions League midweek.

Wolfsburg beat Fortuna Duesseldorf 4-1 away to end its seven-game run without a win in interim coach Lorenz-Guenther Koestner's first game in charge.

----

PARIS (AP) - Lille bounced back from its midweek Champions League defeat by beating Valenciennes 2-1 in the French league on Saturday.

Lille, which lost 1-0 at home to Bayern Munich on Tuesday, made the perfect start when Valenciennes defender Gaetan Bong turned the ball into his own net under pressure from Lille striker Nolan Roux in the second minute as they were both stretching for a loose ball.

Valenciennes midfielder Carlos Sanchez was sent off in the 28th for picking up two quick yellow cards.

Lille got its second goal just before the break when forward Salomon Kalou broke free and passed wide to winger Dimitri Payet, who scored with a powerful low shot across goalkeeper Nicolas Penneteau.

Anthony Le Tallec pulled a goal back for Valenciennes with 20 minutes remaining after a fine run and pass from midfielder Gael Danic.

---

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) - Malaga remained third in the Spanish league after drawing 0-0 at struggling Espanyol on Saturday, while Salva Sevilla's early goal gave Real Betis a 1-0 home win over Valencia.

Malaga outplayed Espanyol in the first half, with defender Martin Demichelis coming close with a pair of headers at Cornella-El Prat stadium.

In Seville, Betis midfielder Sevilla drove his volley past goalkeeper Diego Alves, who got a hand to the ball but not enough to keep it out, to score what proved to be the winner in the ninth minute.

---

MILAN (AP) - Serie A strugglers Siena and Palermo played out a dull goalless draw on Saturday, in a clash between the league's bottom two clubs.

Both teams struggled to carve out goalscoring opportunities. Palermo fared the better in the second half but failed to score for the sixth time this season.

---

ATHENS, Greece (AP) - Christos Aravidis scored twice, including an 87th minute winner, to lead Panionios to a 2-1 victory over host Panthrakikos in the Greek league Saturday.

Aravidis had opened the scoring in the 18th but Juan Manuel Munafo equalized for Panthrakikos in the 59th.

The win propelled Panionios to second place in the Greek league, 3 points behind leader Olympiakos. The defending champion will have the chance to widen its lead when it travels to Aris Monday.

Panionios moved ahead of PAOK, which was held to a scoreless draw at Kerkyra, prompting an angry PAOK coach Giorgos Donis to declare after the game that his players failed to follow any of his instructions.

Also Saturday, Levadiakos and Asteras played to a scoreless draw.

Ryan Hits Obama on the Auto Bailout

SABINA, Ohio - In an effort to blunt the president's narrow lead in this state where one in eight jobs is connected to the auto industry, Paul Ryan introduced a new line of attack at a rally here, noting that Barack Obama has been campaigning in the state on "how the auto bailout was such a success," but the GOP vice presidential nominee tried to tell the audience there is more to the story.

Before the rally, Ryan met with a group of nine non-union salaried workers from Delphi, a company that spun off from General Motors in 1999. Due to the bailout they faced significant cuts to their pensions and benefits when the company went bankrupt and Ryan was quick to talk about the issue on the stump.

"I represent Southern Wisconsin, and one of the towns that I represent is Oak Creek, Wisconsin," Ryan told the crowd of about 800 at a high school here. "Now the reason I mention this is because we used to have two Delphi factories in Oak Creek, Wisconsin. I just had the opportunity to sit down with some Delphi employees here, some of the salaried employees here, who are just like the people that I know who are my friends and constituents in Oak Creek, Wisconsin. You see the president likes to go around Ohio talking about how he saved the auto industry ? tell you what: he hasn't talked to these Oak Creek salaried employees, he hasn't talked to these Ohio Delphi salaried employees because this is one of those examples of the government picking winners and losers."

Ryan said the workers only wanted "transparency and honesty from their federal government and they're not getting it. And they deserve better than that."

"There's nothing wrong with asking for honesty and decency and fairness and transparency and equal treatment for all," Ryan said.

During the 1999 spinoff negotiations between GM and Delphi, three unions secured benefit guarantees for their members, but Delphi workers who were non-unionized salaried employees, as well as hourly employees belonging to other unions, did not have those same guaranteed protections, and those are the workers Ryan met with and was referring to on the stump Saturday night.

The union workers that were covered in their negotiations had their pensions made whole by GM in the auto bailout.

Ryan compared the Delphi workers who saw their pensions cut to auto worker job losses in his home state, something he has mentioned on the campaign trail since he was selected to be Mitt Romney's running mate, and most famously in his Republican National Convention address.

"Look at Delphi perfect example, we lost four auto factories in the district I represent since 2008," Ryan said. "In my home town of Janesville, Wisconsin, we were kind of a one-factory town - we had a big GM plant, we made Suburbans and Tahoes and then we had these feeder plants ? a lot of my friends I went to high school with worked there, now they don't have a job."

Ryan was heavily criticized over this part of his convention speech because he linked the closure of the GM plant to Obama, who gave a speech there in 2008. But, the last GM vehicle produced at the plant was in late 2008 when George W. Bush was still president.

The auto bailout has been fodder for both sides of this campaign. The Democrats have continuously criticized Romney for his November 2008 New York Times op-ed, titled "Let Detroit Go Bankrupt," in which Romney called for a privately financed managed bankruptcy for the auto giants, with the government providing guarantees to their loans.

It's ammunition the Democrats use continuously on the campaign trail. Most recently, Obama and Romney got into a testy exchange over it during last week's final presidential debate, with Romney saying Obama was mischaracterizing the editorial.

The president said if he had taken Romney's advice "we'd be buying cars from China instead of selling cars to China."

The Obama campaign responded Saturday evening saying Ryan "is trying to rewrite history" and he is "shamelessly" using the "misfortune of Delphi workers to attack the president."

"The fact is that when the American auto industry and its workers were on their knees, Mitt Romney turned his back," Obama spokesman Danny Kanner said in a statement. "Every day, Mitt Romney proves he'll say anything to win votes, but Ohioans deserve a president they can trust when it matters most, which is exactly what they have in President Obama."

Ryan also told voters at East Clinton High School in this critical state that he knows they "are used to being the battleground state of battleground states" stressing the importance of working on the ticket's behalf in the 10 days remaining in the campaign.

"You've got a very unique responsibility on your hands," Ryan said at his fifth and final stop on day one of his bus tour. "It's a great opportunity because, Ohioans, as you go so goes the rest of the country in so many ways. You're used to this, you've been in this position before and I think and I know you understand the consequences."

Ryan starts day two of his bus tour Sunday continuing to travel across the state. He will also be joined by his running mate, making stops in Celina, Findlay, and Marion. Romney continues campaigning in the state Monday, while Ryan will stump in Florida.

Is Your Price Attracting the Customers You Want? | Sales Motivation ...

sales prospecting effort 262x300 Is Your Price Attracting the Customers You Want? photoWhat is the objective of lowering your price to try and get more sales?

Anyone can get more business if they lower their price. It doesn?t take a rocket scientist to figure that one out.

Here?s the question you have to ask: What is the objective of lowering your price?

Too many times companies lower their price all for the sake of building the business, but all they wind up doing is attracting customers who don?t appreciate or value the full price.

These customers are many times driven solely by price; therefore, if they had to pay full price to receive what it is you?re selling, they wouldn?t do it.

Sure, you may have moved inventory and you may have created cash-flow, but at what cost to you and your company?

I?d say the cost is high, because it tells every other customer who did pay full-price that they paid too much.

Second, it begins to get you thinking that maybe the reduced the price is the right price you should be at.

Third, customers who are attracted to you on price will leave you as soon as you increase your price.

Wow! Those three things are a great way to kill a business. ?Remind me again why discounting your price makes sense?

The biggest issue of all is customers who are attracted to you because of your lower price tend to be needy customers.? These are the ones who, because they don?t understand value, will harp and bug you over and over again the entire time they?re doing business with you.

These customers many times wind up taking valuable time away from not only you, but also other people in the company as they nag and pester on everything.

My suggestion to avoid all this nonsense?

Build your sales proposition around your full-price.

Instead of pouring resources into discounting your price, do things that help people understand your price/value relationship.?? Finally, be sure to remember that many times the best sale you?ll ever make is the one you never get.? What I mean by this is sometimes a sale you could make at a lower price will wind up costing you far more than you ever imagined.

You tell me: ?Is your price attracting the customers you want?

The Better Baker: {Slow Cooker} Vegetable Breakfast Casserole

? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ??

This is a terrific dish with many options to use what you love best.?

It cooks overnight so breakfast is ready when you climb out of bed. ?What's not to love about that????

And your house is going to smell so good you won't WANT to stay in bed!?

Use what you have leftover in the fridge, or your favorite additions.?

I'm thankful I came across this yummy recipe at?Cooking with Libby?cause we really loved this! I make a lot of Libby's crockpot recipes.?

Just chop - layer - cook!....While you're sleeping even!!!

{SLOW COOKER}VEGETABLE BREAKFAST CASSEROLE?

1 lb. bacon, sausage, or ham (cooked & chopped)

1 sm. onion, diced

1 sm. bell pepper, diced

3 green onions, chopped

Half a 32 oz. bag of frozen hash browns

(I suggest using the cubed hash browns as they will hold their shape better after overnight cooking)

1 and 1/2 c. shredded cheese?

(I mixed cojack along with 2% fiesta cheese)

6 eggs

(or 4 eggs and 4 egg whites)

1/2 c. (1%) milk (I used just a tad more)

Salt and Pepper, to taste

Spray slow cooker with cooking spray or place a liner inside.

?Layer the ingredients as follows - hash browns, meat, onions, bell pepper, and?

1 cup cheese ?

?In a bowl, mix together the eggs, milk, salt, and pepper.

?Pour egg mixture over ingredients in slow cooker. ?

?Spread the remaining cheese on top.

?Cook on low for 7 hours overnight.

(I recently purchased an electronic timer (about $5) and set it to?turn off about an hour before I wake up...I think that's?better than having it start after you go to bed as you don't want the eggs to sit out without cooking).?

(Note: I placed a paper towel under the lid to catch the moisture so you

don't have a soggy breakfast)?

sought loans to finance bombing - The Times

A terror cell applied for a series of high interest loans to fund their suicide bombing campaign believing that they would not be around to make repayments, a court as been told.

Pumpkin and Butternut Squash Lasagna @ The Plant-Based Diet

Oct

24

2012

What Is It

In a word, pumpkin and butternut squash lasagna is winter?s ?comfort-food.? Ok, maybe that?s two words, but you get the idea.

Even in California, October has a way of letting you know the seasons are changing. Our trees may not show-off like their Eastern cousins and our rooftops may not sport an early-season snow, but we know it?s fall. Temperatures drop 50 degrees F, and our lawns turn to rust. Take a look at any local restaurant menu and you?ll see the seasonal changes. Gone are the light summer salads and fruity drink recipes. The best restaurants usher in seasonal favorites using fresh ingredients like broccoli, cauliflower, kale and snow peas. Pumpkin and butternut squash grows plentifully this time of year.

Here?s a great make-ahead recipe for a vegetarian lasagna that oozes warmth and comfort, and makes your kitchen just smell like winter.

Full disclosure: While I?ve made many versions of this before, this recipe was inspired by Rachel Ray. I?ve borrowed from it, then tweaked and tuned it to make it my own.

There?s lots of moving parts to this recipe, so clear off your kitchen island and gather your mise en place (a fancy way of saying, ?get your stuff together.?

Ingredients

Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper

1 large bunch spinach, cleaned and stems removed

4 garlic cloves, peeled and roasted or soft-boiled

6 tablespoons butter

1 bunch fresh sage leaves, rolled and torn

1 pound butternut squash, peeled and cut 1-inch cubes

1 1/2 cups canned chicken stock

4 tablespoons all-purpose flour

3 cups milk (2 cups half-and-half)

Freshly grated nutmeg

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/8 teaspoon dried ground ginger

Two 15-ounce cans pure pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie filling)

3 large eggs

1 cups fresh ricotta

8 ounces mozzarella, shredded

2 cups freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano

1 box no-boil flat lasagna

12 ounces provolone cheese, thin-sliced

How To Make It

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.

Soak the lasagna sheets in water for 5 minutes.

Bring one quart of water to a boil in a large pot and add a healthy pinch of salt. Cook the spinach for 3 minutes and drain.

In a small bowl, smash the roasted garlic with a fork.

Melt 3 tablespoons butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Roll the sage in your palm to lightly bruise it and release the aroma. Tear it into bits and add to melted butter and stir. Add the squash and season with salt and pepper. Add chicken stock and simmer for 15 minutes. It?s ready when all the stock is absorbed and the squash is tender. Remove from the heat and set aside.

Soften 3 tablespoons butter in a small saucepan over medium heat. Add the flour and whisk briskly for 1 minute. Stir in the milk (or half-and-half) and smashed garlic. nutmeg, cinnamon and ginger. Cook until slightly thickened.

Combine the pumpkin puree, 2 eggs and a pinch of salt and pepper in a small bowl.

In another bowl, whisk together the ricotta, mozzarella, 1 cup Parmigiano-Reggiano and 1 egg.

Assembly

Pour half the garlic sauce into the bottom of a 9 by 11-inch baking dish. Add a layer of lasagna sheets and then half the pumpkin mixture on top of the lasagna sheets.

Make another layer of lasagna sheets and spread with all of the ricotta and mozzarella mixture, followed by the squash and then spinach. Top with half of the thinly sliced provolone.

Now, lay down another layer of lasagna sheets and top with the remaining pumpkin mixture. Place another layer of lasagna sheets and finish it by topping with the remaining garlic sauce and sprinkle with the remaining Parmigiano-Reggiano and finally, the remaining layer of provolone.

Baking

Cover and bake for 45 minutes. Raise the oven temperature to 400 degrees F, uncover the lasagna and bake for 15 minutes. Remove from oven and let it rest so it can firm up.

Swaps: If your family turns a nose to spinach, try arugula instead. For the cheese, you can leave out the mozzarella altogether by doubling the ricotta.

Note: The recipe calls for a generous amount of butter and cheese. Keep in mind that it makes 8-10 servings, when done. You can always use less butter than the recipe calls for, but if you cut back on the cheese, it might turn out dry and deflated.

The bigger, more controversial, surprise has to do with the significantly-enhanced iPad. While many of us were expecting a refresh of the iPad with a new Lightning connector and improved ?internals,? the improved A6X chip as well as new features like HD Facetime make the third generation model - launched earlier this year - basically obsolete.

As we await the iPad mini to roll out in the coming weeks, it will be interesting to see what types of apps perform the best on the new device. While the 4:3 aspect ratio and 1024 X 768 resolution will make it possible for literally any existing iPad app to be downloaded to the more diminutive device, a new version of iBooks could unveil a new generation of education apps.

In Demand Jobs For Multitaskers - Business Insider

Multitasking has gotten a bad rap recently?more than one study has shown it makes you less efficient and, well, stupider. (As someone once said, ?Multitasking means screwing up several things at once.?)

And yet, many jobs seem to require multitasking skills. So what gives?

It could come down to the definition. ?Humans don?t really multitask,? says Eyal Ophir, the primary researcher on Stanford?s multitasking study. ?We task-switch. We just switch very quickly between tasks, and it feels like we?re multitasking.?

As such, being a master multitasker isn?t about talking on the phone, updating a spreadsheet and listening to music all at the same time?a sure recipe for sloppy work. It?s about being able to efficiently transition from project to project. And that hyper-organized form of time management is a prized asset in many industries.

If you enjoy juggling many balls and switching between multiple projects in the blink of an eye (no hours of deep contemplation for you), check out these top seven career options:

1. Event Planner

Whether you?re coordinating a custom-designed wedding or planning a major industry conference, event planners keep track of a million little details. From the color of the napkins to the size of the clean-up crew, you?ve got your eye on every project.

Average Salary: $27,000 ? $77,000
Job Outlook: 44 percent (much faster than average)

2. Chief Listening Officer

As a CLO, you monitor what?s being said about your company by keeping your ear to the digital ground. And because there?s a lot of ground to cover?including social media sites, web forums, blog comments and online reviews?you must be skilled at deftly jumping between platforms. Your fast-paced responses help fix complaints, issues and misinformation.

Average Salary: $31,000 ? $95,000
Job Outlook: 21 percent (faster than average)

3. Administrative Assistant

Admin assistants are organizational powerhouses. To keep your company running smoothly, you must efficiently handle the myriad of administrative tasks that come flying across your desk.

Average Salary: $29,000 ? $67,000
Job Outlook: 12 percent (about average)

4. Television Producer

TV producers must be comfortable having their hands in a whole lot of pies. Over the course of a single project, you may be involved with a TV show?s initial development, casting, shooting, wrapping and everything in between.

Average Salary: $68,000
Job Outlook: 11 percent (about average)

5. Construction Manager

To keep construction projects on schedule and under budget, you must wear many hats (and not just the big plastic ones). Whether you?re directing teams on the ground, presenting plans at a city council meeting or juggling supply logistics, you?re adept at shifting between roles to get your project done.

Average Salary: $50,000 ? $150,000
Job Outlook: 17 percent (about average)

6. Middle School Teacher

Keeping a classroom full of seventh graders engaged with algebra is a multitasking achievement all on its own?and that?s just the beginning for middle school teachers. Seamlessly switching between lessons, parent/teacher meetings and administrative duties means you have a full slate of tasks.

Average Salary: $35,000 ? $81,000
Job Outlook: 17 percent (about average)

7. Nurse

Caring for multiple patients, speaking with families and filling out paperwork keeps nurses constantly moving from role to role?caregiver, educator, administrator and team player.

Average Salary: $44,000 ? $95,000
Job Outlook: 26 percent (faster than average)

Beyond this bunch, many non-traditional jobs?like freelancers, slashers and startup employees?also rely heavily on multitasking skills.

Salary and job outlook data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Big week of BCS scoreboard watching for Oregon

This is a big week for Oregon's BCS title hopes.

No, not because the second-ranked Ducks play hapless Colorado. That'll be a breeze.

The teams directly ahead of Oregon in the BCS standings (Alabama, Florida and Kansas State), and the one right behind (Notre Dame), are all playing ranked foes Saturday.

So the Ducks, fourth in the BCS standings, could get some of the help they need to move up ? or they could slip further back in the race to the national championship game.

It's a bit early to get overly worked up about the BCS pecking order. There are 11 undefeated teams in major college football, and the most there could be at the end of the season is seven. But you can whittle that down to four serious contenders for a spot in the BCS title game in Miami.

Ohio State is ineligible. Ohio University doesn't play a tough enough schedule. The Big East champion probably won't be able to climb over the top teams from the Southeastern Conference, Pac-12 and Big 12, and Notre Dame.

Out of the top five teams, Oregon seems to be the most likely to get left out of the national title game if more than two teams finish unbeaten. Excuse Ducks fans if they are a bit skittish. The BCS hasn't always worked out in their team's favor (see 2001 and '05).

Here's an example of the Ducks' problems: Notre Dame is at Oklahoma. If the Fighting Irish win, there's a chance they could jump the Ducks in the BCS standings the way Kansas State did last week. If Oklahoma wins, it makes Kansas State's victory at Oklahoma look even better and could push the Wildcats further ahead of the Ducks.

The Ducks' problems come down to schedule. Oregon's opponents so far just haven't been particularly good, and it's especially weighing the Ducks down in the computer ratings.

Oregon is second in both polls that are used in the BCS standings, but sixth in the computer rankings.

And part of Oregon's strength of schedule problem is Kansas State's fault. The Wildcats and Ducks were supposed to play each other last season in Manhattan, Kan., and this season in Eugene, Ore., but Kansas State backed out of the home-and-home when the Big 12 going to a nine-game conference schedule.

That left the Ducks with Arkansas State, Fresno State and Tennessee Tech to tuneup with this season. Oregon easily dispatched all three, but two months into the season the Ducks still don't have a marquee victory.

Obviously, Kansas State couldn't have known how this would play out, but it's looking like one of the best decisions coach Bill Snyder has made since returning to the sidelines.

After Colorado, the Ducks get into the teeth of their conference schedule with Southern California, Stanford and Oregon State all coming up, plus a possible Pac-12 title game (and maybe a rematch against USC). Win all those and the computers will spit out some different numbers on the Ducks.

Will it be enough to catch Kansas State if the Wildcats keep winning? Or fend off Notre Dame? Stay tuned.

Seismologists found guilty of manslaughter

Six Italian seismologists, and a local civil protection official, have been sentenced to six years in prison for manslaughter.

They have been convicted of falsely reassuring the residents of the town of L'Aquila that a major earthquake was not going to happen. But the area was struck by a magnitude-6.3 earthquake on 6 April 2009. More than 300 people were killed and thousands were left homeless.

In the light of the verdict, New Scientist takes a look at what happened, and the science of earthquake prediction.

Can we predict earthquakes?
In short, no. Despite decades of research, we do not have a reliable way of predicting when and where an earthquake is going to happen with any accuracy.

That's not to say we don't have any information. Clearly, places like the Pacific Rim are more prone to earthquakes than, say, western Europe. High-risk regions tend to be on the boundaries of continental plates, or near cracks in the plates, known as fault lines.

Seismologists can track the frequency and size of earthquakes in different parts of the world and use the data to make rough statistical forecasts of the likelihood of future quakes (Geophysical Journal International, DOI: 10.1111/j.1365-246X.2012.05521.x). This allows regions that are likely to experience a big quake in the next few decades to prepare generally? ? for instance by strengthening buildings.

But the statistical forecasts are vague, and can span decades, says Roger Musson of the British Geological Survey in Edinburgh, UK. A truly useful prediction would be something like: "Next week, there will be an earthquake in Geneva of a magnitude greater than 6.5." That would allow for planned evacuations and other emergency measures. At the moment, nobody can make such precise, timely predictions.

But wasn't the L'Aquila quake predicted in advance?
In the run-up to the main earthquake, two things happened. First, there was a series of small shocks. These caused concern, because they could have been "foreshocks": small quakes that come before a large one.

The trouble is, such small quakes often peter out without leading to a big one, and sometimes big quakes aren't preceded by foreshocks. In the case of L'Aquila, big quakes in the area tended not to have foreshocks, Musson says. So although a big quake was obviously possible, there was no particular reason to think one was coming.

The situation was muddied further by predictions by Giampaolo Giuliani, a researcher at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory in Abruzzi, Italy. Giuliani drove around the town with a megaphone encouraging people to evacuate. He also posted warnings online, but was forced to take them down? ? all of which fanned the emotional flames, says Musson.

After the quake struck, Giuliani claimed he had been vindicated. But Musson disagrees. Giuliani had detected radon gas seeping up from underground. Radon emissions are sometimes seen in the run-up to earthquakes, and may be an indicator that a quake is coming. But like all other prediction methods, radon is unreliable? ? partly because many other phenomena also release it.

In fact, Giuliani got the location of the earthquake wrong, says Musson. "He was recommending that people evacuate areas that were undamaged [in the event], into areas that were damaged. If people had paid attention, the casualties would have been worse."

So what did the six seismologists that have been charged do?
They spoke at a meeting on 31 March 2009 ? a week before the quake ? organised by Italy's Civil Protection Department. At the meeting, they said that while they could not rule out a major quake, and it was best to be prepared, there was no particularly good reason to think that one was coming.

Afterwards, the department's deputy head Bernardo De Bernardinis told the media that the small shocks were reducing the seismic stresses, lowering the chances of a major quake. "That's completely wrong," Musson says.

This statement, according to the prosecution, gave false confidence to the inhabitants of L'Aquila. This may be true. However, Musson says, "I haven't been able to work out why the other six are being held responsible".

Don't some scientists claim to be able to predict earthquakes?
There are all sorts of claims, but none has proved reliable. It has been suggested that earthquakes are preceded by rises in temperature or pulses of electromagnetic radiation. Under-sea quakes may give themselves away by making the crust more prone to quakes caused by the rise and fall of the tides. Some have even claimed that animals can sense earthquakes in advance, and behave oddly as a result.

These claims are often based on case studies of single earthquakes, and do not stand up to statistical scrutiny. Musson says there doesn't seem to be a single phenomenon that reliably precedes an earthquake.

Have there been any cases of successful predictions?
The only occasion when an earthquake prediction has led to a successful evacuation happened in China in 1975. A magnitude-7.3 quake hit Haicheng, and was predicted based on a series of foreshocks, among other things. China was deep into the Cultural Revolution, so information is hard to come by, but there do seem to have been successful evacuations (Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America, DOI: 10.1785/0120050191).

At the time, the Chinese authorities boasted of their success. Their claims of earthquake prediction were undermined the following year when the magnitude-7.8 Tangshan earthquake struck, killing over a quarter of a million people? ? the deadliest quake of the 20th century.

Given that, Musson says, the Haicheng prediction was "more good luck than judgement".

Lance Armstrong is stripped of his titles, Obama and Romney will debate in Florida, and more in our roundup of the stories that are making news and driving opinion

1. CYCLING UNION STRIPS ARMSTRONG'S TITLES
The International Cycling Union, the sport's governing body, agreed on Monday to strip retired cyclist Lance Armstrong of his seven Tour de France titles, saying that Armstrong "has no place in cycling." The decision follows this month's finding by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency that there is "overwhelming" evidence that Armstrong was involved as a professional cyclist in "the most sophisticated, professionalized, and successful doping program." Armstrong has consistently denied allegations of doping that have dogged him for much of his career. [CNN]

2. OBAMA AND ROMNEY TIED ENTERING FINAL DEBATE
In what is expected to be the final major event in the presidential campaign, President Obama and his GOP rival, Mitt Romney, are meeting in Boca Raton, Fla., Monday night for their third and final debate. The televised confrontation will focus on foreign policy, which has taken a back seat to the economy in the campaign. Still, any major flub or triumph could prove critical, as the candidates are entering the debate essentially tied in the polls after two earlier debates, national conventions, and an estimated $750 million in TV ad spending focusing on winning over voters in nine swing states that could tip the vote.?[Philadelphia Inquirer]

3. GUNMAN KILLS THREE IN SPA SHOOTING
Police say that a 45-year-old former Marine and car salesman, Radcliffe Haughton, walked into the Azana Salon and Spa in the Milwaukee suburb of Brookfield and shot seven women, killing three of them before fatally shooting himself. Investigators believe the deadly attack at the salon, where Haughton's estranged wife, Zina, worked as a hair stylist, was an offshoot of domestic violence. Zina Haughton had recently secured a four-year restraining order against her husband. Police have not released the names of any of the victims; the four women wounded in the shooting are all expected to survive. [Milwaukee Journal Sentinel]

4. LEBANON CRISIS SPREADS AFTER ASSASSINATION
Lebanese troops battled gunmen in Beirut suburbs on Monday as the country sank deeper into a political crisis following the assassination of a senior intelligence official, Brigadier General Wissam al-Hassan, in a car bombing last week. Four people were also reportedly killed in clashes in the northern city of Tripoli. The violence fueled fears that the civil war in neighboring Syria was spilling over the border and rekindling sectarian divisions in Lebanon, upsetting a fragile political balance.?[Reuters]

A car bomb exploded and killed 13 people Sunday in Damascus, Syria's capital, as U.N.-Arab League envoy Lakhdar Brahimi met with President Bashar al-Assad to discuss a ceasefire. Brahimi is trying to get Assad and the rebels trying to topple him to agree to stop fighting during the four-day Eid al-Adha Muslim holiday, which starts Friday. The Syrian government says it supports the envoy's efforts. Brahimi says he has discussed his truce proposal with opposition leaders, who have given him "promises" but no "commitment" to suspend fighting. [Voice of America]

6. JORDAN FOILS TERRORIST PLOT
Jordan's government says it has arrested 11 men linked to al Qaeda's Iraq affiliate who were plotting a major terrorist attack that was to include near-simultaneous strikes similar to the Mumbai attacks of 2008. The government says the alleged plotters, all Jordanian nationals, had amassed a huge arsenal of explosives and weapons from the battlefield in neighboring Syria, and intended to divert security forces with attacks on shopping centers and cafes, then launch a wave of attacks against government buildings and embassies, including America's. TMZ, however, says Lohan's management team and lawyers endorse Michael Lohan's attempt to get a conservatorship for his daughter, who he says needs help kicking substance abuse problems.?[TMZ]

Lawyers, bankers help boost Obama's fund-raising over Romney in ...

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Attorneys, business owners and retirees were among those who helped President Barack Obama maintain slim fundraising supremacy over Republican challenger Mitt Romney last month, with the president raising $181 million as he entered the last full month in the fight to keep his job.

An Associated Press review of newly released financial reports found at least $11 million from lawyers and at least $3 million from investors and bankers, some of whom cooled to the president earlier in this election campaign when critics say he cracked down on Wall Street and pushed for consumer-protection reforms. About $22 million more came from retired Americans, an important bloc of voters likely more tuned in to health care reform and changes in retirement benefits.

Their contributions, among hundreds of thousands, went hand-in-hand with record donations to an outside political group helping Obama win a second term. Still, the president began October with less available money to spend than Romney, as Obama's campaign, the Democratic Party and related groups reported $149.8 million cash on hand. That's compared with $183.1 million in the bank among Romney's campaign, the GOP and his joint-fundraising apparatus.

All told, a swath of small-dollar contributions helped Obama and the Democratic Party best Romney and the GOP by more than $10 million last month after being repeatedly walloped in the money race earlier this year. The president's fundraising haul topped the more than $114 million he and the Democrats raised during the month of August, and the cash Obama pulled in last month was slightly less than his record-breaking $190 million from September 2008.

Financial support to Obama and Romney are putting the presidential election on track to cost nearly $2 billion, thanks to mountains of cash earmarked to both campaigns and independent "super" political committees working on their behalf. Wealthy Americans are increasingly picking up the tab this year, at times giving millions of dollars apiece to super PACs that have buoyed costly advertising.

September's reports show major financial support going to both Republican and Democratic super PACs, with the pro-Romney Restore Our Future PAC reporting it collected $14.8 million in September, the group's second-most lucrative month. Late Saturday, American Crossroads, the major super PAC headed by GOP strategist Karl Rove, reported $11.6 million for September, the highest single-month total for the group.

Rove's top donors in September included Texas billionaire Harold Simmons, who gave $2.5 million and Oklahoma coal baron Joseph Craft III, who gave $1 million. Another $1.32 million was donated by the Armstrong Company, a Pennsylvania conglomerate which provided the donation as "in-kind cable access, and $1 million from Jay Bergman, an Illinois oilman.

Meanwhile, Priorities USA Action, the pre-eminent Obama-supportive super PAC, said it raised a record $15.3 million.

"People who support the president know that we've come too far to go back now," Priorities senior strategist Bill Burton said. "We're ahead a little bit now, but it is time to close the deal."

Both campaigns and super PACs have made an all-out push for contributions as Election Day quickly approaches. The contributions are funding a record-breaking campaign operation for both candidates, which translates to paying a legion of campaign staff and hundreds of millions of dollars' worth of television ads.

So when it came to contributions directly to Obama's campaign, business owners and some Wall Street types helped pick up the tab, even if they didn't make up a majority of total contributions. Obama's donors in September included more than 4,000 CEOs, records show, and his campaign continued to tally millions pouring in from key battleground states.

Yet Obama hardly has a lock on winning the financial fight.

Republican super PACs have helped to match or exceed Obama's TV ad spending in dozens of media markets in battleground states. Ad spending data obtained by the AP from April through early October found pro-Romney spending has exceeded pro-Obama ad spending by at least $65 million across the nine states expected to decide the election: Colorado, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, Virginia, Iowa and Wisconsin.

Obama broke presidential fundraising records four years ago, but has found himself financially outgunned for much of the summer, thanks in part to super PACs supporting Romney. Meanwhile, an AP review of campaign data this fall found Obama out-raising Romney in most of the 11 states that at one point were pivotal to win the election.

Reports detailing revenues and expenses for the first half of October are due to the Federal Election Commission by Oct. 25. Those will provide the public with the last financial snapshot before the Nov. 6 election.

Sky gazers can expect as many as 60 meteors an hour as the earth crashes into icy remnants abandoned by Halley?s Comet when it shot by the planet in 1986. The meteor shower will originate near the orange-glowing Betelgeuse star that makes up the right shoulder of Orion (The Hunter), most easily found by his conspicuous belt of stars.

The objects are boulders of ice and rock breaking into the atmosphere at about 148,000 miles per hour. Most sizzle and burn, creating ?shooting stars? and even ?earthgrazers? that span the sky. Larger chunks may actually explode into fireballs loud enough to hear down here on earth.

(A large chunk of asteroid that entered the atmosphere and exploded just off the coast of northern California on Wednesday, in some cases shaking houses, was likely not part of the Orionids, NASA says.)

According to Weather.com, large sections of the Atlantic, the South, the Midwest, and Coastal West are likely to see crystal clear skies overnight. The moon has just begun to wax, meaning moonlight interference will be low.

Philosophers have long pondered the stars, but the Orionids usually inspire poetics even among the country?s most hardened space scientists. (For others who want to gush or chat, NASA will have its experts on hand starting Saturday night at this link.)

?The Orionid meteor shower isn?t the strongest, but it?s one of the most beautiful showers of the year,? says Bill Cooke, head of NASA?s Meteoroid Environment Office.

Tony Phillips, who blogs at spaceweather.com, explains why in a NASA post.

?The shower is framed by some of the brightest stars and planets in the heavens,? he writes. ?Constellations such as Taurus, Gemini, and Orion provide a glittering backdrop for the display. But that?s not all. This year, Venus and Jupiter have moved into position with Sirius, the Dog Star, to form a bright triangle in the eastern pre-dawn sky. On the morning of Oct 21st, blazing pieces of Halley?s Comet will cut straight through the heart of this celestial triad.?

NASA has a few suggestions for how to optimize the show. The best display is likely to be two hours before sunrise, when Orion will be straight overhead. The meteors will burst from near Betelgeuse, but will spray across the entire sky. And remember: don?t blink.

?Be prepared for speed,? says Mr. Cooke, according to NASA. ?Only the November Leonids are faster.?

You betcha: Fargo awaits TV version of hit movie

FARGO, N.D. (AP) ? Ask folks in Fargo what they first thought about the 1996 movie that made their city famous, and some will tell you they were not fans.

Some residents initially didn't appreciate the Coen brothers' dark humor or were offended by the extreme violence and depiction of Scandinavian culture. Not to mention those heavy accents on "you betcha" and "ya sure."

But the fame and cash it brought Fargo eventually brought the city around. Now, 16 years later, Fargo awaits the debut of a new cable television show by the same name, and many residents here are less apprehensive about how their hometown will be portrayed this time around. Just ask Kristin Rudrud.

"Anything the Coen brothers are going to be involved in is going to be brilliant," said Rudrud, 57, who played a supporting role in the movie and has a hankering to promote everything about her hometown. "And they love Fargo. They love this area. So it will be done in a very fun and loving way."

The Oscar-winning "Fargo" starred Frances McDormand as Marge Gunderson, a pregnant police chief who investigates a series of murders, and William H. Macy as a car salesman who hires two criminals, played by Steve Buscemi and Peter Stormare, to kidnap his wife. In one of the final scenes, Stormare feeds Buscemi's body into a wood chipper.

Though the movie's story is mostly based in Minnesota, it made Fargo a household name for many across the country ? to the early dismay of some city folk who watched the premiere at the Fargo Theater in 1996.The theater was quiet inside and some moviegoers were offended, said Margie Bailly, who was executive director of the Fargo Theater at the time. Some residents even walked out.

"Those of us who were laughing were a little lonely," she said.

But locals later warmed up as the film was nominated for seven Academy Awards, and Fargo started to see the benefits from all the publicity. The theater hosted a free Oscar party with a polka band and Jell-O treats that Entertainment Weekly billed as one of the top soirees of the evening.

That event was publicized in several countries, and Fargo cashed in. Donations flowed for the theater's restoration, which dovetailed with plans to revitalize the city's downtown.

Sixteen years later, travelers looking to see the real Fargo still swing through, with many flocking to take a picture next to the iconic wood chipper, autographed on the chute by the Coen brothers and displayed at the city's main tourism center. Tourism staff hand out ear-flap hats to tourists and take pictures of them stuffing the leg of a mannequin into the Yard Shark.

"A good majority of people come in here just looking for the wood chipper," said Jayne Rieth, who works at the tourism center. She didn't like the movie on the big screen, but watched it at home recently so she could be better informed at work. And the tourism center and shops around town sell plenty of wood chipper T-shirts, shot glasses, koozies, mugs and ? of course ? ice scrapers.

City boosters hope the TV show produced by Joel and Ethan Coen, the Minnesota-born brothers behind the popular film, will add to the notoriety. No timeline has been announced by the FX Network, and John Solberg, FX's senior vice president of public relations, did not return messages left by The Associated Press.

"I don't know how it can be a bad thing for us," said Charley Johnson, president and CEO of the city's convention and visitor's bureau. "People still talk about the movie all the time."

Larry Gauper, of Fargo, a retired health insurance executive, also thinks most people are looking forward to the TV show.

"There are some people who don't like us sort of being mocked or being made fun of, but I think most people really appreciate the attention Fargo gets," Gauper said.

But "Fargo" movie fan Marnie Piehl wonders if the city has changed too much ? thanks to population growth and a revitalized downtown with high-end restaurants and bars serving craft beer and organic vegetables ? that it no longer makes sense to situate the TV show here. McDormand's character would have left Fargo years ago, Piehl said.

"That may sound funny to someone from New York, but it just doesn't fit for me anymore," she said. "The North Dakota story is not the Marge Gunderson story anymore."

Though details about the plot and characters in the FX show are scant, that hasn't stopped Fargo residents from speculating about it.

Mayor Dennis Walaker said his favorite character is the sheriff, and hopes McDormand gets a prominent role. And although Rudrud's character, Macy's wife, was killed off in the movie, she joked that there might be room for her in the adaptation.

"Well, I haven't been chopped up," she said. "There's always a possibility."
