FUKUSHIMA, Japan --? This weekend will mark the first anniversary of the devistating earthquake and tsunami that sent three nuclear reactors into meltdown in northern Japan.?
The quake and subsequent tsunami left 15,848 dead and 3,305 missing, according to Japan's National Police Agency.? Thousands continue living in temporary housing and Japanese officials face an uphill battle as they dispose of rubble and try to rebuild economies and livelihoods.
A 9.0 magnitude strong earthquake struck off the coast of northern Japan on March 11, 2011 at 2:46 p.m. local time.? The quake triggered a tsunami wave of up to ten metres which engulfed coastal communities in north-eastern Japan.? The tsunami damaged the Fukushima nuclear plant, causing the worst nuclear crisis in decades.
