Rhode Island Real Estate | Weekapaug?s Atlantic Avenue ? Rhode Island?s Gold Coast
Atlantic Avenue is a meandering stretch of road that runs along the Atlantic coast and connects the quiet vacation hamlet of Weekapaug, RI to the bustling restaurant, entertainment and nightlife district of Misquamicut. What each has to offer is a story for another day. This story is about the trip between those two points ? a trip that has left vacationers in awe and wonderment for more than a half century.
Atlantic Avenue begins at the Weekapaug Bridge and as you begin your drive the only buildings you will notice are The New Breachway Market, Seafood Haven and the members-only Seaside Beach Club. Once past this 200-yard stretch you enter a much different world. Along the north side of the entire stretch of roadway is the Winnapaug Pond with its shallow inlets, sea grasses and an array of beautiful seabirds. It is the south side ? the ocean side ? of the roadway that serves as a conversation piece for the thousands, if not millions, who have made the trip over the years. The ocean side of Atlantic Avenue is one continuous stretch of money in the form of ?cottages?.
These so-called cottages make my home and yours look like tool sheds! The sightseer (or gawker!) marvels at the unique architecture of each place. Some are old New England while others are ultra modern with odd-shaped windows, solar panels and winding staircases around the outside. Some roofs have what look like small lighthouses at their peak while others have top-floor decks looking much like a ship?s crow?s nest. Each cottage is oceanfront just yards away from the sand and pounding surf.
The driveway entrances to these places are flanked by small lighthouses, boat achors or some other nautical theme. Driveway fences here are not made of wood but rather nautical rope and it seems each mailbox post has a lobster pot affixed to it. More than one tourist who has seen these entrances has said, ?I gotta do that to my place when I get home!?
That is not the only comment made countless times on this trip over the years. We wonder, ?Who are these people? Where do they come from? What do they do for a living? How can anybody be that rich? If I had a place like that I?d stay here all year!?
What adds to the mystery of the Atlantic Avenue cottages is that you never see ?these people?. Many of the places appear empty and unused and if you were to walk on the beach on the other side of these places, I wouldn?t expect someone to come running out the back door shouting, ?Hi, I?m Joe, a commodities broker and I?m the multi-millionaire who owns this place!?
No, the people and their places will always remain a mystery. Frequently there are ?For Sale? signs posted at the driveways which leads us paupers to believe the owners got tired of this place and decided to buy something on the French Riviera. A quick check in the local real estate magazine reveals the price tag. It is always seven figures and the first of the seven figures is rarely a ?one?.
Suddenly, the cottage mansions come to an end and you find yourself once again driving past beach parking lots, bath houses, mini-golf courses, an amusement park, shops and restaurants. You are back to reality after two miles of dreaming.
Tom Zalaski is a television news anchor, author, emcee and professional speaker whose book ?The View From The Blanket ? Vacation Memories From A Place Called Weekapaug? takes you to the Atlantic Ocean?s Gold Coast and a secret vacation oasis known as Weekapaug, RI and the surrounding area of Westerly, Watch Hill and Misquamicut. And while you may have never been there, Tom?s essays and tales of vacationing in Weekapaug will have you believing he accompanied you on your vacation. Whether your vacation oasis is the ocean, the lake, a cottage on the river or a hunting camp, Tom?s book will have you saying, ?Hey, that?s what we do! It?s like he went on our vacation!?
