Developing skills through a communications internship | This is ...

Over the past?three months, I have been working at the national Parents as Teachers office as an intern the Marketing Communications Department.
As an aspiring writer and a recent communications?graduate of Maryville University, I was drawn to the intern opportunity at Parents as Teachers to gain experience. I was seeking a position where I could experience a fast-paced, hands-on environment in communications and I got that and more.
I have been working closely with professionals in marketing communications, completing real-world projects from start to finish.
Throughout the summer I?ve written stories?for the web site and articles for print and electronic?newsletters. I?ve also distributed e-blasts, media alerts and press releases to create awareness for the 2011 Parents as Teachers Conference. In addition, I?ve taken short videos to post on YouTube to promote Parents as Teachers training.
With my experience, I feel that I am ready to take on my next challenge!

Some Fed officials sought more economic stimulus (AP)
WASHINGTON ? Some Federal Reserve officials pushed in August for a more aggressive response to the economy's slowdown. They settled for a pledge to keep rates super-low for two more years and agreed to consider additional options at an extended meeting in September.
Minutes of the Aug. 9 discussions released Tuesday show that Fed officials discussed a range of actions, including another round of Treasury bond purchases. Some Fed officials said a weaker economy called for such a step.
Fed officials in the end opted to keep rates low until at least mid-2013. They also added a second day to their September meeting. That raised speculation that the Fed would announce some further action after that meeting.
Three Fed members opposed any steps for fear they could ignite inflation. The 7-3 vote after the meeting marked the first time in nearly 20 years that at least three members dissented from a Fed statement.
Stocks rose modestly after the minutes were released. The Dow Jones industrial average gained more than 30 points. Broader indexes also increased.
The minutes show Fed officials discussed the two-year pledge to keep interest rates near zero, a third round of bond purchases, and shifting the mix of the Fed's holdings into long-term Treasury securities. Some members also raised the idea of tying the pledge to keep interest rates low to a level of unemployment or inflation, instead of the set time period.
The bond purchases are intended to keep long-term rates low and aid the economy. The second round of bond purchases, announced last year, sparked a 28 percent rally in the Dow through April 29.
Charles Evans, the president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, said Tuesday that he was one of the Fed officials who favored more aggressive policy actions. He was also one of the seven officials who supported the two-year timeframe for keeping rates near zero.
"Strong accommodation needs to be in place for a substantial period of time," Evans said in an interview on CNBC.
Analysts have speculated that such a high level of dissent makes it harder for Fed Ben Bernanke to rally support for more action. Others say the August vote shows Bernanke is willing to press forward, even with a divided board.
And at least one of the dissenters may be softening his opposition. Narayana Kocherlakota, president of Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis, said Tuesday that he would not seek to overturn the August decision at future meetings. He said such a move would undercut the Fed's ability to make similar pledges in the future.
Investors had hoped Bernanke would provide details of the Fed's next moves during a highly anticipated speech in Jackson Hole, Wyo. But Bernanke offered no new steps. He did say the central bank would extend its September meeting to two days to allow for a fuller discussion. On Tuesday, the minutes show that the board had pushed for the longer meeting.
A turbulent summer has fueled fears that the U.S. is on the verge of another recession.
The economy grew at an annual rate of just 0.7 percent in the first six months of this year, the weakest performance since the recession ended two years ago. Europe's debt crisis has intensified. U.S. lawmakers fought over increasing the nation's debt limit, and only agreed to do so hours before a potential default. That prompted Standard & Poor's to lower its rating on U.S. long-term debt for the first time in history.
Stocks plunged in late July and early August. The Dow has lost nearly 11 percent of its value since July 21.
A handful of reports showed that growth picked up at the start of July-September quarter. In July, consumers spending rose by the most in five months, the economy created twice the number of jobs as in each of the previous two months, and a rebound in the auto sector drove factory production up by the most since the Japan crisis.
Still, consumer confidence in the economy plunged in August to a two-year low, according to a report Tuesday from the Conference Board. The downgrade in U.S. debt and the stock market plunge likely contributed to the decline.
A key question for the economy is whether consumers and business will continue to pull back on spending this fall.
The Fed minutes also showed that the central bank held an unscheduled videoconference on Aug. 1 to discuss their options if Congress did not increase the borrowing limit in time to avoid a default. The minutes did not provide details on what actions were discussed.

Gaddafi family members flee to Algeria without him (Reuters)
TRIPOLI (Reuters) ? The wife of Muammar Gaddafi and three of his children took refuge in Algeria on Monday but the whereabouts of the former strongman himself remained a mystery a week after rebels drove him from power.
Algeria's Foreign Ministry said Gaddafi's wife Safia, his daughter Aisha and his sons Hannibal and Mohammed had entered Algeria on Monday morning.
The development threatened to create a diplomatic rift just as the rebel National Transitional Council (NTC) worked to consolidate its position as Libya's new government.
An NTC spokesman accused Algeria, Libya's western neighbor, of an act of aggression and said the council would seek to extradite the Gaddafis.
A senior rebel officer also said Gaddafi's son Khamis, a feared military commander, had been killed in a clash outside of Tripoli. The report could not be independently confirmed.
Meanwhile rebel forces converged on Gaddafi's hometown of Sirte from east and west, intent on seizing one of his last bastions of support either by force or by negotiation.
Muammar Gaddafi's whereabouts have not been known since Tripoli fell to his foes and his 42-year-old rule collapsed a week ago after a six-month uprising backed by the West and several Arab nations.
Algeria's acceptance of Gaddafi's wife and offspring angered the rebel leadership, who want him and his entourage to face justice for years of repressive rule and who fear that he could orchestrate a new insurgency unless he is captured.
"We have promised to provide a just trial to all those criminals and therefore we consider this an act of aggression," spokesman Mahmoud Shamman told Reuters. "We are warning anybody not to shelter Gaddafi and his sons. We are going after them...to find them and arrest them."
NTC chairman Mustafa Abdel Jalil called on the Algerian government -- which has not recognized the council as Libya's legitimate authority -- to cooperate with it and hand over any of Gaddafi's sons who is on its wanted list.
Asked if he knew where Gaddafi senior was, he told al- Jazeera TV: "If we knew where Gaddafi was now our revolutionaries would be on their way to capture him. We have no information that Muammar Gaddafi is in Libya or in any other place."
Earlier on Monday, Jalil appealed to NATO to keep up its air campaign in support of the rebels, saying Gaddafi was still a threat.
NATO warplanes have struck at Sirte, on the Mediterranean coast, in recent days and Britain said its aircraft also attacked artillery units of Gaddafi forces near Sidra, west of the oil town of Ras Lanuf.
LAST STAND AT SIRTE?
Whether or not Gaddafi is hiding in Sirte to make a last stand, the city would be a strategic and symbolic prize for Libya's new rulers as they tighten their grip on the vast North African country.
Rebel forces were advancing toward Sirte from east and west even as contacts continued for its surrender. Their eastern column had pushed past the village of Bin Jawad and secured the Nawfaliya junction By Monday.
Marwan Mustapha, an ambulance worker at Nawfaliya, said: "God willing, the rebels will enter the city without bloodshed and the negotiations will have succeeded. But if they have to enter by force, there will be blood."
In the desert to the south, Gaddafi loyalists were also holding out, notably in the city of Sabha.
But the death of Gaddafi's son Khamis, if confirmed, would be a serious blow to any chance of a military fight back.
Colonel Al-Mahdi Al-Haragi, chief of the rebels' Tripoli Brigade, said he had confirmation that Khamis was badly wounded in a clash near Ben Walid. He was taken to hospital but died and was buried in the area, Al-Haragi said.
Rebel military spokesman Colonel Ahmed Bani told Al Arabiya TV that the rebels also believed Gaddafi's intelligence chief Abdullah al-Senussi was killed on Saturday along with Khamis,
"We have almost certain information that Khamis Gaddafi and Abdullah al-Senussi were killed on Saturday by a unit of the national liberation army during clashes in Tarhouna (90 km southeast of Tripoli)," Bani said.
A U.S. official said Washington could not independently confirm Khamis' death but similar information was being received from "reliable sources."
Khamis has already been reported killed twice during the uprising only to re-emerge.
Earlier on Monday, prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo of the International Criminal Court had said he may apply for an arrest warrant for Khamis.
Human Rights Watch said members of the Khamis Brigade, which he commanded, appeared to have carried out summary executions of prisoners whose bodies were found in a warehouse in Tripoli.
The Hague-based ICC has already approved arrest warrants for Muammar Gaddafi, his son Saif al-Islam, and Senussi on charges of crimes against humanity.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) ? The Texas Rangers are providing no additional information on the condition of a male fan knocked unconscious after falling 21 feet in a stairwell while leaving a game at Rangers Ballpark.
Citing privacy laws, the team Sunday gave no updates on what happened the previous night. Nearly two months ago, Brownwood firefighter Shannon Stone died after tumbling out of first-row seats and about 20 feet to concrete behind the left-field wall when he reached out to catch a baseball tossed his way.
Arlington police investigators said after Saturday night's game that they were trying to determine exactly how the 24-year-old man fell, but considered it an accident.
Police and fire officials said Sunday they had no updates.

Perhaps the most important of all these reasons is the fact that connecting to other organizations will be much more difficult when a company doesn't operate through an ERP software vendor. Supply chains are designed to allow businesses and government agencies to share information and track resources and supplies from creation through production to sale. A piecemeal system that cobbles together existing programs and is stitched together by in-house teams will not have nearly the same efficiency when it comes time to connect with other organizations.

Amazon Expedition Discovers New Monkey (LiveScience.com)
A possible new species of monkey has been discovered during an expedition in an unexplored part of the Amazon in mid-western Brazil.
A specimen, which scientists know is a type of Callicebus, or titi, monkey has been turned over to experts at the Em?lio Goeldi Museum in the Brazilian state of Para, where it will be studied and formally described. [Amazon Expedition: An Album]
"This primate has features on its head and tail that have never been observed before in other titi monkey species found in the same area," said Julio Dalpone, the biologist who discovered the monkey during the World Wide Fund for Nature-backed expedition.
The expedition found the monkey between the Guariba River and the Roosevelt River in the northwestern part of the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso.
The 20-day expedition undertaken in December of 2010 explored four protected areas of the Guariba-Roosevelt Extractive Reserve, the Tucum? State Park and the Roosevelt River and Madeirinha River. It was intended to gather information to improve the management of these areas.
The team found 48 species of mammal, including armadillos, anteaters, deer and monkeys, as well as 313 species of birds, including some that had only previously been seen in other South American countries. Their survey of fish turned up possible new species, including a catfish, a small, brightly colored tetra, and very small fish known locally as 'piaus.' They also found threatened species, including a giant anteater, giant armadillo, giant otter, jaguar and ocelot.

Fossil redefines mammal history

A small, 160-million-year-old Chinese fossil has something big to say about the emergence of mammals on Earth.
The shrew-like creature is the earliest known example of an animal whose kind evolved to provide nourishment to their unborn through a placenta.
Its features clearly set it apart from marsupial mammals, which adopt a very different reproductive strategy.
The discovery pushes back the date the two groups took up their separate lines, according to Nature magazine.
The journal carries a paper written by a team of palaeontologists led by Zhe-Xi Luo from the Carnegie Museum of Natural History, Pittsburgh, US.
It describes the fossil remains of an animal unearthed in China's northeast Liaoning Province, which has produced so many stunning fossils in recent years.
The new specimen, which the scientists call Juramaia sinensis, records many of the key features of the long-dead organism, including its skull and even impressions of soft tissues such as hair.
But, most importantly, the Juramaia fossil also retains a full set of teeth and forepaw bones.
It is these parts that have enabled palaeontologists to place the creature among the eutherians, or what we more commonly would refer to as placental mammals; as opposed to the metatherians, whose descendants include marsupials such as kangaroos.
"The teeth of Juramaia show all the typical eutherian dental features," Dr Luo explained.
"Specifically, eutherians have three molars, and five premolars. This is in contrast to metatherians characterized by four molars and three premolars.
"Details aside, the difference in teeth of Juramaia allow us to identify it as belonging to the eutherian lineage. In addition, the forelimb and wrist bones show some eutherian features; they completely lack the important diagnostic features of metatherians-marsupials," he told BBC News.
The Liaoning specimen is especially significant because it means the fossil record now sits more comfortably with what genetic studies have been suggesting about the timing of the emergence of the different mammalian lineages.
These DNA investigations had indicated that eutherians should have been in existence much earlier than the previous oldest-known eutherian fossil - a creature called Eomaia, which lived about 125 million years ago.
Juramaia's appearance in the Jurassic Period of Earth history would appear to corroborate what the genetics has been saying.
Today, 90% of all mammals, which include humans of course, are placentals. Knowing the timing of the split from marsupials is fundamental to understanding the full story of the evolution of mammals.
Another interesting aspect of the discovery is what the fossil can tell us about the lifestyles of the early placentals, and it seems they were pretty adept at climbing.
"Juramaia is an insectivorous mammal. It weighed about 15 -17 grams, more or less the size of a shrew," Dr Luo said.
"Its hand structure suggests that it was a capable climber. So we interpreted it to be a tree-climbing insectivorous mammal hunting insects for living," the Carnegie Museum researcher told BBC News.

"He brings broad marketing and operational experience across a wide range of distribution platforms, including cable television and the Internet," WWE Chairman and CEO Vincent K. McMahon said in a statement.
Goldfarb also sits on the board of Atrinsic and Vitacost.com. He graduated from Adelphi University with a bachelor's degree and has a law degree from Hofstra University School of Law.

As people approach their golden years, a lot of them end up needing additional outside attention to help them cope with many of life?s basic necessities. Often they will need help with dressing, bathing, and perhaps even eating.
Sometimes taking care of a senior citizen at home becomes overwhelming and too challenging. At that point in time, family members begin to consider whether or not the elder?s needs could be better addressed if they were moved to a nursing home or to an assisted living facility.
When family members place a senior citizen in such a facility they are trusting that their loved one will be properly cared for and that they will be in a safe and happy living environment. However, this is not always the case.
Elder abuse is running rampant in our country. It?s been estimated that abusive situations exist in nearly one out of every three nursing homes in the United States. And studies have also indicated that for every case of abuse that has been reported, five others remain unreported.
Elders are often abused by the staff of these residences because these workers are traditionally overworked and underpaid. And when that happens they tend to take their feelings out on the victims who are least able to protect themselves ? the senior citizens who are in their care.
If you have a loved one in such a residence it is in their best interest fort you to keep your eyes open for any potentially abusive situations. Here are a number of the things you should look for:
? Does your loved one have any bruises or discolorations on the thighs or inner arms? Do these bruises look like finger prints or thumb prints? Do you see any choke marks on their neck?
? Do new bruises show up where old bruises had been?
? Do they have different colored bruises?
? Does it look like their bruises have been caused by belts (possibly used to restrain them), cords or coins?
? Do they have any cigarette burns, pinch marks, rope burns, cuts or scratches?
? Do they have any fractures?
? Are there other signs of any physical injuries on their face, head or scalp, such as a black eye?
? Is their appearance unkempt?
? Are their clothes torn or stained?
? Is their hygiene poor?
? Are their toenails or fingernails dirty or uncut?
? Is their dental hygiene inadequate?
? Do they seem fearful, resigned, or helpless?
? Do they tell you what seem to be implausible stories?
? Do their providers not permit them to be alone with anyone, including you?
? Are they not allowed to speak for themselves?
? Do their providers restrict their contacts with the outside world?
? Do their care providers restrict the activities that the seniors are allowed to do?
If you notice that any of these things are happening to your loved one, then it is in their best interest that you contact the proper authorities in order to prevent this abuse from taking place.

Lokpal Bill: Stakeholders appeal for a meeting minds for ...
Saturday, the fifth day of the indefinite fast commenced by well known social activist and anti-graft campaigner Anna Hazare saw a cross-section of society, including stakeholders, politicians, parliamentarians, ministers, activists and others giving their views on the issue of corruption, and what would be the most effective way to tackle the menace.
The day began with Congress spokesperson and chairperson of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Lokpal Bill, Abhishek Manu Singhvi, inviting the views of stakeholders, activists and others to ensure an effective anti-graft legislation.
"We have already had a very positive, detailed discussion with members of the civil society. This is just the beginning. We have now, as established procedure for decades, in England for centuries, invited views of diverse stakeholders, and we will look at everything very carefully," said Singhvi.
"It will then be followed by witness evidence and hearings and then, clause by clause, the attempt of the committee will be to take all the ideal elements from each proposal, be it Lokpal or Jan Lokpal or any third proposal, and try to create the best, the strongest Bill, according to our understanding," he added.
"This is a very serious, it is not a formal exercise. We take our jobs seriously and we will do it clause by clause," he said further.
Though the government had appointed the joint drafting committee of the Lokpal Bill in April 2011, after Hazare went on an indefinite hunger strike against corruption in New Delhi, the legislation was presented before parliament on August 4.
Civil society activists have repeatedly slammed the government?s draft version as ?toothless and ineffective? as it does not include the prime minister, judges and the lawmakers in its ambit.
Former Supreme Court judge and Karnataka Lokayukta Justice (retired) Santosh Hegde demanded that the government must accept the Jan Lokpal Bill formulated by civil society, while at the same time admitting and accepting parliament?s right to debate it and make into law.
"Our only demand is, let the Jan Lokpal (Ombudsman) Bill also go before the Parliament, let the Parliament discuss. Ultimately, Parliament will make it and if we are not satisfied with them, we will go to the court," said Justice (retired) Hegde.
"Everybody knows ultimate law is to be made by the Parliament; there is no difficulty about that. So, let them not teach us all that may be while speaking because of emotions that are coming out, the way they have insulted us with all those factors, but law has to be made by the Parliament. Law cannot be made by anyone of us for that matter. This is a suggestion; we have a right to give a suggestion to the Parliament," he added.
He further said: "Parliament is there to make law. While making the law should it not take views of different sections of the society? Parliament, which has an absolute majority, will listen to only its views, but here is a Parliament, which is consisting of different political parties with substantial representation from different political wings and other. So let them all know what it is. What the government of the ruling party say is you go and convince each member, 540 odd members are there. Is it practically possible or if we call a meeting of all of them for a seminar, will they come, they will not come."
However, V. Narayanasamy, Minister of State in the Prime Minister?s Office (PMO), countered Justice Hegde?s view by saying: "If anybody criticizes the Parliament Standing Committee and, if they cause obstruction in the Standing Committee, it is clearly breach of privilege."
He further added: "The Members of Parliament who are sitting in the committee are like Members of Parliament who are functioning inside Parliament. Therefore, the rights and privileges of the members are there, and, if anybody criticizes the functioning of the Standing Committee, it is a clear case of breach of privilege."
Rajeev Shukla, Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs, said: "I think, it is highly inappropriate to question the functioning and proceedings of the Indian Parliament. Members of the Standing Committee of the Parliament represent various political parties in the country and it is incorrect to question or malign them. They discuss core issues and have also asked for public view on the Lokpal (ombudsman) Bill.
"I do not think there is anything wrong with it. To call the proceedings of the Parliament as misleading and a waste of time is incorrect in my viewpoint. It is now for the common man to decide who is wrong and arrogant," he added.
Congress lawmaker Naveen Jindal said: "If someone is trying to wishfully malign the proceedings of the Indian Parliament and call it a waste of time, then I think that person is unaware of the system and functioning of the Indian Parliament."
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) lawmaker Mocha Abbas Naqvi, however, said: "It is our (lawmakers) responsibility that we get out of the web of laws, rules and regulations to ensure the passage of the Lokpal (ombudsman) Bill."
He added: "We need to put the laws aside and give this issue priority status. For this, either a special parliamentary session should be held. If needed, the current session could be extended or a special session comprising members from both houses of the Indian parliament must be held to table, discuss and pass the Bill at the earliest."
He also said that with each passing day, mass anger against corruption is increasing.
"To ensure that this public anger does not tarnish the reputation of Indian democracy, it is important that the government, after having neglected the woes of the people and its responsibilities, awakens and does not make it a prestige issue," he said.
"The kind of mass movement and public support that has emerged against corruption across the country is unparalleled. We salute the spirited campaign spearheaded by Anna Hazare. We also feel that neither is it fair to criticize him, nor would it in any way affect the campaign against corruption."
Swami Agnivesh, an associate of Hazare, told the public gathered at the Ramlila ground that: "Without making them smell chloroform our ministers were unconscious and now their intoxicated state has been removed by Anna Hazare."
He added: "Tell them (the government) to quickly register a case against us, and call us in the Parliament and we will tell as to why we consider them (the lawmakers) useless. We don?t call them useless but the Bill that the government has presented before the parliament is totally useless and is not even worthy of throwing in the dust bin, and why is it that they are still holding the Bill so close to themselves?"
He also criticized Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram, saying that as the Delhi Police worked under the directions of his ministry, he was responsible for the arrest of Anna Hazare and not the Delhi Police.
"Where there was insult, Chidambaram blamed it on the Delhi Police and when he was released, and today in the newspaper, it has come to notice that he told the Delhi Police to do so," Agnivesh said.
He added: "There is nothing left with the government because the Opposition members who are part of the Standing Committee have rejected the government?s version of the Lokpal (ombudsman) Bill. Now there is no use of the Standing Committee."he Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, sought to bring reason to tempest created by the anti-graft movement against his government, saying that intense criticism notwithstanding, his government desired a ?strong and effective? Lokpal Bill.
"We are all in favour of a Lokpal (ombudsman) which is strong, which is effective, and therefore, there is a lot of scope for give and take. Our hope is that we can enlist the cooperation of all thinking segments of Indian public opinion to ensure that the end product is a strong and effective Lokpal which all sections of our community want," Dr. Singh said.
India is ranked 87th of 178 countries in the list of the world?s most corrupt nations, according to a 2010 survey of Transparency International.
Graft has long been a part of daily life, but the recent scandals ? which include violations in granting telecom licenses that cost the country 39 billion dollar in lost revenue and the Commonwealth Games fiasco- are unprecedented. (ANI)
