Community Helps LPD Officer & Family After House Fire

It's a twist for a local police officer, instead of helping people, Sunday we found the community helping him.

After a fire destroyed the Clark family home on June 23rd and four pets never made it out of the house. Sunday afternoon friends hosted a pet themed fundraiser to help them get back on their feet.

Misty is the only Clark family pet who survived the fire.

Randy Clark told 10/11, "One of the friends of my daughter's when the fire started was able to get her out, and you can tell she's missing her buddies, we've had some moments."

Most of the family was in South Dakota when a lightning strike started the fire. They got the phone call around 3am and got home as fast as possible. Randy says four of the family's five pets--two dogs, a cat and a gerbil died from smoke inhalation.

"They were very much family members, they each had their own personality."

That's why friends as well as the pet's veterinarian at Highlands Animal Hospital stepped up to host a "Paws-it-tive" fundraiser.

Jodie Smith is a family friend who helped plan the event. She said, "That's been the hardest part of the whole thing, everything's replaceable, but not your pets."

Taylor Cobb is also a family friend and helped put it together. He told 10/11, "We just figured it's really important to give back more than you take, and all about being a community member is to help those in need."

Especially they say for a family and a man like Randy who's a Lincoln Police Officer.

Smith said, "His job is to serve the community and now it's the community's turn to give a hand back."

Randy added, "It's terrific, it's very nice and like I told my wife, that's why we live in Lincoln, because Lincoln is a big city, but it doesn't have a big city feel and I honestly feel that way, members of the police department have been very good and my wife works for the state of Nebraska and her co workers have been great."

He said the family is so thankful for all the support. They have insurance and they're in the process of rebuilding.
