WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? The Washington Nationals will avoid salary arbitration with starting pitcher Gio Gonzalez by agreeing to a contract extension through the 2016 season, the team said on Sunday.
The Nationals, who acquired the All-Star left-hander from Oakland last month as part of a six-player trade, will have options for 2017 and 2018.
Gonzalez, 26, is coming off his finest season in the majors, finishing with a 16-12 record and a 3.12 ERA in 32 starts for the A's. He is 38-32 with a 3.93 ERA in his four big-league seasons, all with Oakland.
