Galaxy on quest for three-peat

Each day from now until the beginning of Major League Soccer?s 18th season, we will preview one Eastern Conference team and one from the West. First kick is March 2.

No. 2 in the West is the LA Galaxy:

Significant additions and subtractions: LA?s offseason may have dominated the headlines, but ultimately there?s been very little change. Eight of the 11 players who would have been first choice at season?s end return to?Bruce Arena?s starting XI.

The biggest loss is David Beckham, but unlike his off-field brand, Beckham?s replaceable between the lines. So is Christian Wilhelmsson, whose brief cameo in MLS ended with a ring. And last year?s starter in goal, Josh Saunders, was allowed to leave for Salt Lake.

That?s where the Galaxy made their one significant addition. Carlo Cudicini, a long-time backup for Chelsea and Tottenham, moves into LA?s starting XI. The last time the now 39-year-old played more than 10 games in a league season was 2003-04.

Strengths:?Questions about Cudicini aside, the defense looks great.?The team will get a full year from MVP candidate?Omar Gonzalez. A.J. DeLaGarza?returns after missing the end of last season. With Todd Dunivant and Sean Franklin, LA competes with San Jose and Real Salt Lake for the league?s best fullback tandem.

In attack, LA has another stellar tandem. Once Landon Donovan is back ? Arena?s said he should start playing in April ? he and Robbie Keane will form the league?s most potent attack. Perhaps it won?t be the most prolific, but as we saw last fall, there?s no duo more capable of executing when it counts.

Pressure points: I?m not sold on Carlo Cudicini in goal, though it seems a reasonable gamble. It?s not like he costs Designated Player money, something you often have to give up to lure a player from Europe. But this is a player coming to a new league who, far past his prime, hasn?t played a meaningful game in three seasons. Over the last decade, he?s averaged 4.6 appearances per season. So let?s just say he?s a question mark.

The team also needs to replace Beckham?s distribution. Juninho and Marcelo Sarvas will be fine in the middle, and Michael Stephens?(and eventually, Mike Magee) will do a job wide right, but when this team gets bogged down and has trouble getting through the middle third, they no longer have Beckham to take over. LA need to develop an alternative so they?re not purely reliant on Donovan?s ability to steer them in transition.

source: Difference maker:?No matter what happens in midfield and attack, the team has Gonzalez, something they were missing at the beginning of last season, The MLS Cup MVP is going to help Cudicini?s transition, and in those opening months where the team?s best creator is still working himself into shape, Gonzalez and the defense will keep LA in every game. In a conference full of strong No. 9s, Gonzalez is LA?s equalizer.

Potential breakout player:?With his midfield partner in Paris,?Juninho will have more to do. That may be a good thing. The 23-year-old chipped in seven goals last season, but this year, he?ll have to play a bigger part in the team?s buildup and distribution. He was hardly lax in those areas before, but with Beckham gone, the Brazilian?s contributions become vital. Where as last year he was able to rely on Beckham?s presence when he surged forward, this year Juninho may have to do some of the orchestrating.

That?s more responsibility, but Juninho?s can handle it. Tasked with having a greater presence, the overshadowed talent could develop into an All-Star.

Bottom line: Number two in the West may be too low. When we originally ordered the West, San Jose?s injury issues were still a little up in the air. Now, LA looks like more than just the team you never want to face in the playoffs. Even before acquiring another Designated Player, the Galaxy are as strong as anybody in the West.

Nate Silver Offers Up a Statistical Analysis of Your Failing Relationship

While data shows that overall happiness in your relationship fell 8 more points, there is still a 31 percent chance of makeup sex this Friday, depending on average energy levels after work and how proactive you're feeling (see chart). However, if you just order $18 of Chinese takeout like you did last weekend, projections show a 16.8 percent drop in possible intercourse and a whopping 74.2 percent upswing in Netflix-streaming, with both of you falling asleep long before the movie is over. New Housing Market Starting to Bloom - Marshall Stearns Property ...

Feb 26, 2013, Posted by: Summer Bowen

New homes for sale in Las Vegas, Vegas Inc, Leila NavidiLast month Las Vegas Valley?s new home market showed signs of starting to bloom with rising sales and construction plans.

Las Vegas-based Home Builders Research reported 513 new home sales in January which is up from just 217 a year earlier. ?This is also the highest January total since 2008. ?Local builders pulled 610 permits in January which is up from 222 a year ago.

The research firm President Dennis Smith reported that most sales are now ?at or above? the listing price, and about 94 percent of sales are cash transactions. If prices continue to rise, Smith wonders if Las Vegas will again see apartment-rental buildings transformed into for-sale condos.

Smith also wrote the following, ?These are indeed amazing changes? After 35 years tracking the housing market, we have learned never say never or always when it comes to housing.?

If you are interested in buying a new home, it would be a good idea to have a Marshall Stearns Real Estate Agent represent you.

Looks like Pluto will have a moon named 'Vulcan'

The votes are in for the SETI Institute's Pluto Rocks Poll, and, thanks in part to William Shatner, Mr. Spock's home planet is a clear winner.?

After 450,324 votes cast over the past two weeks, Vulcan is the clear winner with a landslide 174,062 votes? due in no small part to a little?Twitter intervention by Mr. William Shatner,?I?m sure.

In other words??yes,?the Trekkies have won.

During a Google+ Hangout today,?SETI Institute?senior scientist Mark Showalter ? who discovered the moons and opened up the poll ? talked with SETI astronomer Franck Marchis and MSNBC?s Alan Boyle about the voting results. Showalter admitted that he wasn?t quite sure how well the whole internet poll thing would work out, but he?s pleased with the results.

?I had no idea what to expect,? said Showalter. ?As we all know the internet can be an unruly place? but by and large this process has gone very smoothly. I feel the results are fair.?

As far as having a name from the Star Trek universe be used for an actual astronomical object?

?Vulcan works,? Showalter said. ?He?s got a family tie to the whole story. Pluto and Zeus were brothers, and Vulcan is a son of Pluto.?

And what can you say when even?Mr. Spock agrees?

The other winning name, Cerberus, is currently used for an asteroid. So because the IAU typically tries to avoid confusion with two objects sharing the same exact name, Showalter said he will use the Greek version of the spelling: Kerberos.

The next step will be to submit these names to the International Astronomical Union for official approval, a process that could take 1?2 months.

(Although who knows? maybe Bill can help move that process along as well?)

Jack Nicholson, 75, flirts with Jennifer Lawrence

Danny Moloshok / REUTERS

By Cody Delistraty, TODAY contributor

Even though Jennifer Lawrence fell on her way up to accept her best actress Oscar for ?Silver Linings Playbook,? perhaps the most embarrassing moment for the 22-year-old came after the show.

While ABC?s George Stephanopoulous was interviewing Lawrence in a post-show wrap-up, three-time Oscar winner Jack Nicholson, 75, came up behind her and said, ?You did such a beautiful job,? before adding ?I would love to interview you.?

Nicholson, who had earlier co-presented the best picture award with Michelle Obama, added to the flirting when he told Lawrence, ?You look like an old girlfriend? to which the actress gamely quipped ?Oh really, do I look like a new girlfriend??

Nicholson didn?t miss a beat. ?I?ve thought about it," he said.

With a smile, the surprised actress exclaimed ?Oh my God!? and buried her head in her hands. Even the 53-year age difference couldn't stop Jack from getting in some banter with Esquire?s ?Sexiest Woman Alive.? Check out the video below.

James McAvoy Rumored for The Crow

Exclusives

Bloody Disgusting has been on the forefront on most of the casting news for Relativity?s The Crow reboot. And even though we were once mocked for announcing that Mark Wahlberg was in serious discussion, it eventually came out via the actor that we were 100% correct. The same insider is back again with another whopper of a tip that was relayed to us telepathically?

James McAvoy, who blew our minds as Charles Xavier in X-Men: First Class, is circling Relativity?s long-gestured remake. He would star as Eric Draven, a man brutally murdered whom comes back to life as an undead avenger of his and his fianc?e?s murder. We?re unsure if McAvoy?s role in X-Men: Days of Future Past will effect his ability to take the role, but we?ll keep you updated.

The film is the latest adaptation of James O?Barr?s incredible revenge comic from 1989.

F. Javier Gutierrez is still attached to direct from a screenplay by Jesse Wigutow. Brandon Lee made the franchise famous when he starred in the 1994 adaptation directed by Alex Proyas.

(AP) ? "Star Trek" fans, rejoice.

An online vote to name Pluto's two newest, itty-bitty moons is over. And No. 1 is Vulcan, a name suggested by actor William Shatner, who played Capt. Kirk in the original "Star Trek" TV series.

Vulcan snared nearly 200,000 votes among the more than 450,000 cast during the two-week contest, which ended Monday. In second place with nearly 100,000 votes was Cerberus, the three-headed dog that guarded the gates of the underworld.

Vulcan was the Roman god of lava and smoke, and the nephew of Pluto. Vulcan was also the home planet of the pointy-eared humanoids in the "Star Trek" shows. Think Mr. Spock.

"174,062 votes and Vulcan came out on top of the voting for the naming of Pluto's moons. Thank you to all who voted!" Shatner said in a tweet once the tally was complete.

Don't assume Vulcan and Cerberus are shoo-ins, though, for the two tiny moons discovered over the past two years with the Hubble Space Telescope.

The contest was conducted by SETI Institute in Mountain View, Calif., the research base for the primary moon hunter. The 10 astronomers who made the discoveries will take the voting results into account, as they come up with what they consider to be the two best names.

The International Astronomical Union has the final say, and it could be another month or two before an edict is forthcoming. Now known as P4 and P5, the moons are 15 to 20 miles across.

The leader of the teams that discovered the mini-moons, Mark Showalter said Monday he is leaning toward the popular vote.

But Showalter pointed out that asteroids thought to orbit close to the sun are called vulcanoids, and there could be some confusion if a moon of Pluto were to be named Vulcan. Vulcan, in fact, was the name given in the 19th century to a possible planet believed to orbit even closer to the sun than Mercury; no such planet ever was found.

What's more, Showalter said in a phone interview, Vulcan is associated with lava and volcanoes, while distant Pluto is anything but hot.

As for Cerberus, an asteroid already bears that name, so maybe the Greek version, Kerberos, would suffice, said Showalter, a senior research scientist at SETI's Carl Sagan Center.

Styx landed in No. 3 position with nearly 88,000 votes. That's the river to the underworld.

Pluto's three bigger moons are Charon, Nix and Hydra.

To be considered, the potential names for the two mini-moons also had to come from Greek or Roman mythology, and deal with the underworld. Twenty-one choices were available at the website http://www.plutorocks.com when voting ended Monday. Of those, nine were write-in candidates suggested by the public, including Shatner's entry for Vulcan.

Shatner's second choice for a name, Romulus, did not make the cut. That's because an asteroid already has a moon by that name ? along with a moon named Remus.

And forget the Disney connection.

"We love Mickey, Minnie and Goofy, too," Showalter informed voters a few days into the voting. "However, these are not valid names for astronomical objects. Sorry."

Altogether, 30,000 write-in candidate names poured in.

Showalter said he will keep the list handy as more moons undoubtedly pop up around Pluto once NASA's New Horizons spacecraft arrives in 2015. It will be the first robotic flyby ever of the planetoid, or dwarf planet near the outer fringes of the solar system.

"I have learned not to underestimate Pluto," Showalter wrote on the website. With so many good names available, "Pluto needs more moons!"

Ultrasound reveals autism risk at birth

Feb. 25, 2013 ? Low-birth-weight babies with a particular brain abnormality are at greater risk for autism, according to a new study that could provide doctors a signpost for early detection of the still poorly understood disorder.

Led by Michigan State University, the study found that low-birth-weight newborns were seven times more likely to be diagnosed with autism later in life if an ultrasound taken just after birth showed they had enlarged ventricles, cavities in the brain that store spinal fluid. The results appear in the Journal of Pediatrics.

"For many years there's been a lot of controversy about whether vaccinations or environmental factors influence the development of autism, and there's always the question of at what age a child begins to develop the disorder," said lead author Tammy Movsas, clinical assistant professor of pediatrics at MSU and medical director of the Midland County Department of Public Health.

"What this study shows us is that an ultrasound scan within the first few days of life may already be able to detect brain abnormalities that indicate a higher risk of developing autism."

Movsas and colleagues reached that conclusion by analyzing data from a cohort of 1,105 low-birth-weight infants born in the mid-1980s. The babies had cranial ultrasounds just after birth so the researchers could look for relationships between brain abnormalities in infancy and health disorders that showed up later. Participants also were screened for autism when they were 16 years old, and a subset of them had a more rigorous test at 21, which turned up 14 positive diagnoses.

Ventricular enlargement is found more often in premature babies and may indicate loss of a type of brain tissue called white matter.

"This study suggests further research is needed to better understand what it is about loss of white matter that interferes with the neurological processes that determine autism," said co-author Nigel Paneth, an MSU epidemiologist who helped organize the cohort. "This is an important clue to the underlying brain issues in autism."

Prior studies have shown an increased rate of autism in low-birth-weight and premature babies, and earlier research by Movsas and Paneth found a modest increase in symptoms among autistic children born early or late.

The study was supported by a grant from the National Institutes of Health.

Sony Confirms Blu-Ray Still Primary Media Format for PS4

PS4 Sticking With Blu-Ray

Despite the exciting possibilities the PS4?s dedicated processor for background processing will bring, Sony is still sticking with a disc-based delivery mechanism, for now. Though there was nigh on a mention of what media future PS4 games (Killzone: Shadow Fall, inFAMOUS: Second Son, etc?) would release on, Sony has now confirmed Blu-Ray discs will still be the dominant format.

With the introduction of PS Plus and Day 1 Digital Downloads, Sony has taken bold steps to create a digital distribution platform that rivals anything available on the PC. Granted, they still have a way to go before the PSN is seen as a Steam equivalent, but with their next-gen console Sony could get there.

However, as Sony?s Jim Ryan tells IGN, the Blu-Ray isn?t going anywhere. Ryan sees the writing on the wall ? digital distribution is the future ? but with download speeds what they are, there is still a need for physical media.

?Clearly, and this applies not just to games but to pretty much every form of entertainment, there is a trend to increased digital consumption, and that is happening now on PS3 and will continue and will probably accelerate on PS4. But the primary delivery mechanism for the big games on the PS4 platform will continue to be Blu-Ray discs, for the foreseeable future.?

That doesn?t mean that gamers won?t see a switch to digital downloads within the PS4?s lifespan, though, that?s actually a likely scenario. When asked for a time frame, Ryan was decidedly evasive, but five years appears to be what Sony is looking at.

For now, however, Sony ? according to Ryan ? encourages developers to take full advantage of a Blu-Ray disc?s 50GB of storage space, a file size that would take days to download on some people?s Internet connections.

So, though we may not know what the PS4 console actually looks like, or have a clear picture of some of its inner workings, Sony is slowly revealing more and more as the days go on. Next up: E3 2013, where even more should be revealed.

How do you feel about the PS4 sticking with the Blu-Ray disc for now? Can you see a digital download-only future?

The PS4 is targeting a holiday 2013 release date.

Dallas ISD coach arrested for sexual assault of student

by JASON WHITELY

WFAA

Posted on February 22, 2013 at 9:55 AM

DALLAS - School district police charged a DISD coach at Molina High School with sexually assaulting and having an improper relationship with a 17-year-old female student.

The felony allegations against Philon Deberry, 43, of Fort Worth, are outlined in arrest affidavits filed in the 282nd District Court.

According to the documents obtained by The Dallas Morning News, Deberry had been harassing the victim by hugging and kissing her since early 2012.

Just before winter break last December, the arrest affidavit said Deberry lured the teenage victim to a locker room at Molina High.

"He ushered her into the room, followed her in, locked the door behind him and started unbuttoning his shorts," the affidavit read. "She was scared and attempted to flee but he grabbed her by her hair. She yelled and nobody came."

The affidavit went on to say that Deberry forced her to perform oral sex on him.

"She hit him and for a moment, he eased his grip and she was able to pull away," the affidavit read.

The investigation started last week about something else. The district got a tip Deberry was taking students off campus for physicals so they could participate in athletics.

While he was on leave, the student came forward.

"He told her that if she told anyone, they wouldn't believe her and it would be his word against hers," the affidavit read. "He would lose his wife and children and this made her feel guilty."

News 8 met Deberry in 2006 when he led the push to bring football back to UT-Arlington. But Deberry was ousted a year or so later for reportedly mismanaging the organization's funds, a claim he denied.

Dallas ISD said Deberry has coached at Molina the last four years.

As of Thursday night, he remained jailed in Dallas County, unable to post $200,000 bond.

Deberry's attorney, Danny Clancy, told News 8 he's on his way back to Dallas and plans to meet with his client for the first time on Friday.

In a letter home to Molina students on Thursday, Dallas ISD urged parents to talk to their children and have them immediately report any questionable contact they experience.

RAM remains one of the principal drains on a smartphone's battery: it's almost always in use, and it saps power even when its host device is idle in a pocket. Toshiba hasn't eliminated that demand entirely, but its new SRAM (not yet pictured here) is intelligent enough to cut a lot of the waste. The memory can better predict what power it's going to need while it's active, and includes a smarter retention circuit that occasionally wakes up to tweak buffer size while it's on standby. While these sound all too abstract, they should lead to some very tangible gains. Toshiba estimates that the SRAM chews up 27 percent less power when live, and 85 percent less when it's just waiting for action. The company doesn't yet know when the RAM will reach finished devices, but we're hoping it's soon when even mainstream phones like the Optimus F7 will ship with 2GB of RAM; that energy draw isn't going down all by itself.

Child care union bill coming

Posted at 3:45 PM on February 22, 2013 by Tim Pugmire (0 Comments)
Filed under: MN Legislature, Mark Dayton

Another effort is underway to organize state-subsidized child care providers.

The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Council 5 is holding a State Capitol news conference Monday to announce the Child Care Collective Bargaining Act. An advisory from the union said legislation will be introduced that day to authorize child care providers to collectively bargain with the State of Minnesota.

Sen. Sandy Pappas, DFL-St. Paul, and Rep. Michael Nelson, DFL-Brooklyn Park, will attend along with child care providers.

A previous attempt to organize the same group of in-home providers failed last year when a Ramsey County judge blocked a unionization vote in response to a lawsuit from union opponents. The judge ruled that Gov. Mark Dayton had exceeded his authority when he scheduled the vote with an executive order.

Separate legislation was introduced this week to allow a unionization vote among subsidized personal care assistants who provide self-directed home health care to the elderly and disabled. The Service Employees International Union is leading that effort.

Bulgaria faces deadlock after government quits

SOFIA (Reuters) - Bulgaria's parliament on Thursday accepted the government's decision to resign in the face of anti-austerity protests, opening the way for an early election that may benefit fringe parties and make it hard to form a stable government.

Outgoing Prime Minister Boiko Borisov, praised by investors for cutting the budget deficit, lost support from voters in the European Union's poorest state over his failure to raise living standards or stamp out graft.

After mass protests set off by high energy bills, Borisov stepped down on Wednesday -- the latest administration to fall in Europe's four-year-old debt crisis.

Parliament voted on Thursday to accept the move and President Rosen Plevneliev will now ask the three biggest parties if they want to form a government to rule until a parliamentary election due in July.

But both Borisov's GERB party and the main opposition Socialists have said they do not want to participate in a caretaker cabinet, so Plevneliev could schedule an election for as early as April. Opinions polls put both parties on about 22-23 percent, suggesting no clear majority in the new parliament.

"We are open for dialogue with all parties but GERB, who ruined everything," said Socialist leader Sergei Stanishev, whose party was level in polls with Borisov's before the protests and may have benefited from the unrest.

The cabinet's departure brought some calm after a chaotic week of rallies against the government and foreign-owned power utilities and a threat by Bulgarian officials to strip one of them, Czech power group CEZ, of its license.

Boriana Dimitrova, an analyst with pollster Alpha Research, said it could push voters towards the political fringe.

"The two key political powers are not strong enough to form a stable government," she said. "The recent protests indicate there is growing support for radical, populist parties, which will also make it harder to form a cabinet."

CALM, FOR NOW

Borisov, a former guard to Soviet-era dictator Todor Zhivkov, won adoration from voters by building highways and improving roads so badly pot-holed that cars could lose wheels and travel across the small country could take up most of a day.

Around 2,000 Bulgarians waving GERB party flags, including farmers driving tractors and a truck full of pigs, cheered in front of parliament in support of Borisov.

"If all possibilities are exhausted...I will form an interim government, quickly and responsibly," said Plevneliev.

Borisov's administration also impressed foreign portfolio investors by freezing wages and pensions and cracking down on the grey economy by digitally linking firms ranging from the largest factory to the smallest kiosk to the tax office.

But those moves angered many in the Black Sea state of 7.3 million, who are also frustrated at his failure to make good on his 2009 election pledge to stamp out endemic corruption and reform inefficient healthcare and education systems.

"Am I pleased with Borisov's resignation? He's just the same as the ones before. They're all corrupt and they don't care about people," said Filip Ivanov, a 37-year-old taxi driver.

Borisov's popularity has suffered due to growing frustration over the slow plod from poverty of a country which has failed to grow convincingly since recession hit in 2009. Living standards are about 45 percent of the EU average, the bloc's lowest.

For many here, where wages average about 400 euros a month and pensions about half that, the final straw was winter power bills which at times exceeded incomes due to price rises that began to bite as temperatures fell.

In protests this month, tens of thousands blocked roads and some clashed with police and attacked offices of power distributors CEZ, Czech Energo Pro and Austrian EVN. The utilities say the increase was in line with a government approved hike in prices last year and said they had done nothing wrong.

Borisov's threat to strip CEZ of its power distribution license has also put Sofia at odds with fellow European Union member the Czech Republic and raised eyebrows over its adherence to the bloc's stipulation that its members follow due process.

But Bulgaria's power regulator appeared to soften its stance slightly on Wednesday, saying CEZ may be able to keep its license if it reverses violations of the public procurement law. CEZ shares fell 2.8 percent on Thursday to a four-year low and Prague urged the European Union to step in.

Before stepping down, Borisov tried to appease voters by sacking Finance Minister Simeon Djankov, a lightning rod for criticism for his leading the charge on belt tightening, and promising a cut in power bills as of March.

For their part, the Socialists have pledged to raise taxes on the rich and scrap a flat 10 percent income tax rate it introduced in 2009 They also want to raise the minimum wage, restart the Russian-backed Belene nuclear power project and to impose strict control on utilities and fight monopolies. that has been a draw for foreign investors.

Up to 12,000 troops to linger in Afghanistan

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The U.S. and its NATO allies revealed Friday they may keep as many as 12,000 troops in Afghanistan after the combat mission ends next year, largely American forces tasked with hunting down remnants of al-Qaida and helping Afghan forces with their own security.

Patience with the 11-year-old war has grown thin in the U.S. and Europe, yet Washington and its allies feel they cannot pick up and leave without risking a repeat of what happened in Afghanistan after Soviet troops withdrew in 1989: Attention turned elsewhere, the Taliban grabbed power and al-Qaida found refuge.

In disclosing that he and his NATO counterparts were discussing a residual force of between 8,000 and 12,000 troops in Afghanistan beyond 2014, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said most allied defense ministers assured him they are committed to remaining part of a U.S.-led coalition.

"I feel very confident that we are going to get a number of nations to make that contribution for the enduring presence," Panetta told a news conference at NATO headquarters in Brussels at the conclusion of a defense ministers meeting.

The U.S. and its allies have managed to stick together throughout the war, despite differing views. The Europeans have seen the military mission as mainly aimed at promoting stable governance; the Americans have viewed it as mainly combat. Some allies, including France, have already pulled out their combat troops.

The Obama administration has not said how many troops or diplomats it intends to keep in Afghanistan after 2014; it is in the early stages of negotiating a bilateral security agreement with Kabul that would set the legal parameters. There currently are 66,000 U.S. troops in Afghanistan, down from a 2010 peak of 100,000.

In addition to targeting terrorists, the post-2014 missions are expected to be defined as training and advising a still-developing Afghan army and police force and providing security for the U.S. and allied civilian and military presence, officials said.

The largely unspoken assumption on which the post-2014 plan is built is that Afghanistan's own forces will be strong enough to hold off the Taliban on their own starting in 2015 and to prevent the country's relapse into civil war. The worry is that if the Taliban regained power they would allow al-Qaida to return in large numbers, defeating the original purpose of the U.S. military action in 2001.

It's a touchy topic at this stage of a still-unfolding war, with Afghans fearful of being abandoned by their foreign partners and Washington and its NATO allies wary of committing too heavily to a corrupt Kabul government facing an uncertain future.

Budget pressures in the U.S. and Europe also complicate the outlook.

"There's no question in the current budget environment, with deep cuts in European defense spending and the kind of political gridlock that we see in the United States now with regards to our own budget, is putting at risk our ability to effectively act together," Panetta said. "As I prepare to step down as secretary of defense, I do fear that the alliance will soon be, if it is not already, stretched too thin."

Panetta is expected to retire as soon as his successor is confirmed. The Senate could vote on the confirmation of former Sen. Chuck Hagel as the next Pentagon chief as early as Wednesday. Panetta is leaving just as Gen. Joseph Dunford is settling in as the successor to Gen. John Allen as commander of U.S. and allied forces in Afghanistan.

Another source of anxiety among the allies is Afghanistan's 2014 presidential election; President Hamid Karzai, who has run the country since U.S. forces toppled the Taliban in late 2001, is not running and there is no obvious successor.

Just last week President Barack Obama announced in his State of the Union address that by this time next year 34,000 U.S. troops will have left, with the rest of the combat force to depart by the end of 2014, along with their counterparts from NATO and other partner countries. Obama did not say how many troops he was willing to commit to a post-2014 mission in Afghanistan, but he is believed to be weighing options that range from about 3,000 to about 9,000.

At the Brussels meeting, German Defense Minister Thomas de Maiziere caused an initial stir by telling reporters that Panetta had said the U.S. would keep 8,000 to 10,000 troops in Afghanistan after 2014. Panetta denied that, saying he was talking about a combined U.S. and NATO force of 8,000 to 12,000, and de Maiziere later said his own comments to reporters were "misleading."

Panetta said officials are planning to leave troops in all sectors of the country as well as in Kabul. Currently, Italy is leading the allied security presence in western Afghanistan, Germany in the north and the U.S. in the east and the south.

The Obama administration also is considering a plan to underwrite the cost of maintaining an Afghan security force of 352,000 for the next five years as part of an effort to maintain security and help convince Afghans that they will not be abandoned.

Last May, NATO agreed that the Afghan force would be reduced to about 230,000 after 2014. A force of that size would cost about $4.1 billion a year, compared to $6.5 billion this year for the bigger force of 352,000. The U.S. pays about $5.7 billion of that $6.5 billion bill.

Scientists turn to real-life 3-D holodecks

Charles Rex Arbogast / AP

University of Illinois-Chicago computer scientist Jason Leigh stands in the CAVE2 virtual-reality system, where 72 stereoscopic liquid crystal display panels encircle the viewer.

By Carla K. Johnson, The Associated Press

CHICAGO ??Take a walk through a human brain? Fly over the surface of Mars? Computer scientists at the University of Illinois at Chicago are pushing science fiction closer to reality with a wraparound virtual world where a researcher wearing 3-D glasses can do all that and more.

In the system, known as CAVE2, an 8-foot-high (2.4-meter-high) screen encircles the viewer 320 degrees. A panorama of images springs from 72 stereoscopic liquid crystal display panels, conveying a dizzying sense of being able to touch what's not really there.

As far back as 1950, sci-fi author Ray Bradbury imagined a children's nursery that could make bedtime stories disturbingly real. "Star Trek" fans might remember the holodeck as the virtual playground where the fictional Enterprise crew relaxed in fantasy worlds.

The Illinois computer scientists have more serious matters in mind when they hand visitors 3-D glasses and a controller called a "wand." Scientists in many fields today share a common challenge: How to truly understand overwhelming amounts of data. Jason Leigh, co-inventor of the CAVE2 virtual reality system, believes this technology answers that challenge.

"In the next five years, we anticipate using the CAVE to look at really large-scale data to help scientists make sense of that information. CAVEs are essentially fantastic lenses for bringing data into focus," Leigh said.

The CAVE2 virtual world could change the way doctors are trained and improve patient care, Leigh said. Pharmaceutical researchers could use it to model the way new drugs bind to proteins in the human body. Car designers could virtually "drive" their vehicle designs.

Imagine turning massive amounts of data ? the forces behind a hurricane, for example ? into a simulation that a weather researcher could enlarge and explore from the inside. Architects could walk through their skyscrapers before they are built. Surgeons could rehearse a procedure using data from an individual patient.

Charles Rex Arbogast / AP

Brain surgeon Ali Alaraj talks about the first time he viewed the brain using the CAVE2. "You can walk between the blood vessels," said the University of Illinois College of Medicine neurosurgeon. "You can look at the arteries from below. You can look at the arteries from the side."

CAVEs aren't cheap
But the size and expense of room-based virtual reality systems may prove insurmountable barriers to widespread use, said Henry Fuchs, a computer science professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, who is familiar with the CAVE technology but wasn't involved in its development.

While he calls the CAVE2 "a national treasure," Fuchs predicts a smaller technology such as Google's Internet-connected eyeglasses will do more to revolutionize medicine than the CAVE. Still, he says large displays are the best way today for people to interact and collaborate.

Believers include the people at Marshalltown, Iowa-based Mechdyne Corp., which has licensed the CAVE2 technology for three years and plans to market it to hospitals, the military and in the oil and gas industry, said Kurt Hoffmeister of Mechdyne.

In Chicago, researchers and graduate students are creating virtual scenarios for testing in the CAVE2. The Mars flyover is created from real NASA data. The brain tour is based on the layout of blood vessels in a real patient.

Brain surgeon Ali Alaraj remembered the first time he viewed the brain using the CAVE2.

"You can walk between the blood vessels," said the University of Illinois College of Medicine neurosurgeon. "You can look at the arteries from below. You can look at the arteries from the side.... That was science fiction for me."

How CAVEs compare
Would doctors process information faster with fewer errors using CAVE2? That's the question behind a proposed study that would compare CAVE2 to conventional methods of detecting brain aneurysms and determining proper treatment, said Andreas Linninger, UIC professor of bioengineering, chemical engineering and computer science.

But it's not all serious business at the lab.

In his spare time during the past two years, research assistant Arthur Nishimoto has been programming the CAVE2 computer with the specifications for the fictional Starship Enterprise. He now can walk around his life-size re-creation of the TV spacecraft.

The original technology, introduced in the early 1990s, was called CAVE, which stood for Cave Automatic Virtual Environment and also cleverly referred to Plato's cave, the philosopher's analogy about shadows and reality. It was named by former lab co-directors Tom DeFanti and Dan Sandin.

The second generation of the CAVE, invented by Leigh and his collaborator Andy Johnson, has higher resolution. The project was funded by the National Science Foundation and the Department of Energy.

"It's fantastic to come to work. Every day is like getting to live a science fiction dream," Leigh said. "To do science in this kind of environment is absolutely amazing."

Will GOP Fumble Away Guaranteed Sequester Victory?

Notwithstanding hysterical rhetoric from the White House, the bureaucracies, and the various pro-spending lobbies in Washington, the sequester does not mean ?vicious? or ?draconian? spending cuts.

I wish that was the case.

All it does is restrain spending so that it grows by $2.4 trillion over the next 10 years rather than $2.5 trillion. We need a much greater degree of fiscal discipline to address the long-term spending crisis ? including some real entitlement reform.

But the sequester is certainly better than doing nothing.

My concern, though, is that feckless and incompetent Republicans will fumble away victory. I explain in this Larry Kudlow interview that ?doing nothing? is the right approach since the sequester happens automatically, but I?m worried that this very modest step in the right direction will be eroded as part of subsequent spending bills.

On a related note, Byron York of the Washington Examiner is rather perplexed by the GOP?s sequester strategy, which is based on the inconsistent message that it should happen, but that it?s bad.

Boehner calls the cuts ?deep,? when most conservatives emphasize that for the next year they amount to about $85 billion out of a $3,600 billion budget.? Which leads to another question: Why would Boehner adopt the Democratic description of the cuts as ?deep? when they would touch such a relatively small part of federal spending? The effect of Boehner?s argument is to make Obama seem reasonable in comparison. After all, the president certainly agrees with Boehner that the sequester cuts threaten national security and jobs.? The difference is that Obama wants to avoid them.? At the same time, Boehner is contributing to Republican confusion on the question of whether the cuts are in fact ?deep? or whether they are relatively minor. Could the GOP message on the sequester be any more self-defeating?

My two cents is that fiscal conservatives should argue that sequestration isn?t the ideal way to trim the burden of government spending, but that it?s the only option since President Obama is refusing to look at any alternatives unless they are based on class-warfare tax hikes and phony entitlement gimmicks.

What really matters, though, is in the driver?s seat in this battle. They can win?but only if they want to.

Every so often, I issue imperious edicts about things that Republicans should do to demonstrate that they genuinely support limited government.

  1. No tax increases, since more money for Washington will encourage a bigger burden of government and undermine prosperity.
  2. To stop bailouts for Europe?s decrepit welfare states, no more money for the International Monetary Fund.
  3. Reform the biased number-crunching methodology at the Congressional Budget Office and Joint Committee on Taxation.
  4. No more money from American taxpayers to subsidize the left-wing bureaucrats at the Paris-based Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.
  5. Defund the crony capitalists at the Export-Import Bank.

I?m not naive enough to think that GOPers actually care about my demands, but I certainly think the sequester is a ?gut-check? moment for Republicans.

If they capitulate to Obama in the short run, or if they wipe out the sequester savings as part of subsequent spending bills, that will be a very dismal sign that the folks who came to DC thinking it was a cesspool have instead decided that it?s really a hot tub.

Velocity Micro arms its Raptor MultiPlex HT/Gaming PC to the teeth ...

raptormultiplexLast month, we featured an article that analyzed the intertwined worlds of home theater and gaming, and since its publication, the two have only become more buddy-buddy. In fact, news recently came along that electronics manufacturer Velocity Micro ? anxious to contribute to all of this togetherness ? has released its Raptor MultiPlex?hybrid HT/gaming system.

Aside from sporting a truly awesome appellation, the hybrid home theater and gaming system serves as a ?media streaming box, DVR, Blu-ray player, and gaming PC. Wow, that?s a mouthful. If only it could cook your breakfast.

According to Randy Copeland, President and CEO of Velocity Micro. the company has always been focused on ?? powerful enthusiast desktops and stunning home theater PCs.? Given that fact, a convergence of the two seems a logical choice.

Digging down to the details, the aluminum-encased Raptor MultiPlex is available with an Asus P8Z77-V Pro Motherboard with Thunderbolt, Intel Core i5 and Core i7 Ivybridge processors, an NVIDIA GTX 600 series graphics card, solid state boot drives, three 2TB hard drives in RAID5 configuration, and TV tuners capable of recording up to four programs simultaneously. It certainly doesn?t look like Velocity Micro skimped on the hardware.

If you?re a big PC gamer and a home theater enthusiast, this seems like a pretty unique opportunity to conveniently merge your respective passions. Considering all you?ll be getting, the $1850 starting price point doesn?t even seem too daunting.

The Velocity Micro Raptor MultiPlex is available now.
